Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan OReilly scored with just 19.9 seconds left in overtime to give the Colorado Avalanche a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Tyson Barrie and OReilly worked the puck back-and-forth in the Flyers end before Barrie sent a pass from the left side to the right and OReilly snapped it in for the win. I wanted to win the draw and then get the puck back, said OReilly. It was a good pass from Tyson and I just wanted to get it on net. It was a great game tonight and this win is a team effort. Nate Guenin, Jarome Iginla and Borna Rendulic all scored for the Avalanche, who snapped a two-game slide. Semyon Varlamov stopped 26 shots in the win. Claude Giroux, Vincent Lecavalier and Jakub Voracek all scored for the Flyers, who have dropped three straight after opening their eight-game road trip with three consecutive wins. Steve Mason allowed four goals on 33 shots. Any time you lose in overtime, youre obviously disappointed, said Grioux. It was a weird game and we just tried to be patient. But when you go into overtime, you should be getting these points. Trailing by a goal, the Flyers tied the game at 2:52 of the third as Lecavaliers big blast from the top of the right circle beat a screened Varlamov. Giroux then gave Philly the lead halfway through the final period on the power play, as he skated up the middle and through the defense before smacking a shot into the left side for his 13th of the season. Colorado, though, was awarded a power play when Braydon Coburn was called for tripping at 11:37, and Iginla scored just over a minute later on a one-timer from the low left circle to tie the game. Voracek finished off a crisp passing play on the power play with a one-timer from the right circle halfway through the first period. Colorado, though, tied the game just past the midway mark of the second after Guenins shot from the left point deflected twice on its way past Mason. Rendulic scored on a one-timer from the high slot that hit off a Flyer and beat Mason high at 14:17 of the second. Game Notes Colorado hosts Edmonton on Friday ... Philly plays in Carolina on Friday ... The Avs were 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Flyers went 2-for-5 ... The Flyers have lost seven in a row in Colorado, last winning on Dec. 27, 2002. MLB Chief Operating Officer Rob Manfred said Thursday that owners "fully expect" to have a rule in place, hopefully this season, but that talks are ongoing. Joe Torre, MLBs executive vice-president for baseball operations, said that the rule, in essence, will "make sure a baserunner cant purposely bowl over" a catcher. Torre says the mentality of runners rounding third and wanting to score at any cost will have to change. "Theres going to be some inadvertent contact that youre not going to be able to avoid," Torre said, "only because the catcher has to go catch the ball." Players association Tony Clark anticipates approval of the rule for this season. A former catcher, manager and broadcaster, Torre said he was approached about a possible rule change in 2011 by San Francisco managerr Bruce Bochy after Giants catcher Buster Posey sustained a severe, season-ending ankle injury in a home-plate collision.dddddddddddd "I talked to Bruce Bochy because he was very concerned," Torre said. "At the time, I said anything that makes sense Ill look at it, but I really didnt see anything that made sense to make sure it doesnt affect our game in a negative manner." But as time passed and more injuries occurred, the idea of a rule change grew more plausible, Torre said. "Weve had minor league injuries," he said. "Ive had letters from parents about what happened to their youngsters." Torre spoke with a series of managers, including St. Louis Mike Matheny, a former catcher. "We all know he had to give up the playing part of it because of the concussions, the number he sustained," Torre said. "Theres an 18-month period of his life that he cant recollect. You have to pay attention to that." Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Durant flirted with a triple-double and didnt turn the ball over in more than 39 minutes, and the Oklahoma City Thunder are over .500 for the first time this season with a 94-86 win over the Miami Heat. Durant had 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, leading OKC to its third straight win despite shooting 0-for-8 from behind the arc and hurting his elbow on a fall early in the fourth quarter. Russell Westbrook had 19 points with 10 rebounds and six assists. Both Thunder stars also had four steals. Reggie Jackson shot 7-for-9 for 16 points, including a 3-pointer that jump-started a 7-0 run late in the fourth to help the Thunder pull away. Oklahoma City lost in both of its previous chances to move above .500, getting routed by Portland on opening night and the Warriors on Jan. 5. Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh scored 18 and 16 points, respectively, in Miamis return home from a five-game road trip. The Heat go back on the road for eight of their next 12 games. Hassan Whiteside scored 10 points in the first quarter for Miami before exiting in the second with an ankle injury. Oklahoma City scored five of the last six points of the third quarter to break a 66-all tie. Neither team scored over the last 1:44 after Jacksons 3 until Anthony Morrow hit a jumper to open the fourth. The lead reached nine a minute later on another Jackson jumper, but Miami trimmed its deficit to two over the next couple of minutes. Three times in the period the Heat found themselves down by two points, the final coming on Wades long 2 with 3:38 to play. Westbrook scored four in a row after Jackson answered Wade with another 3- ball, and the lead grew to 10 on a Steven Adams flush with 1:19 to play. The Heat led most of the first quarter before Morrow hit a pair of 3s during an 11-2 Thunder run. Neither team led by more than 10 over the course of the back-and-forth affair. Game Notes The two teams play again in Oklahoma City on March 22 ... Wade missed the previous two games with a strained left hamstring ... Morrow scored 12 points ... The inexperienced Englishman was promoted within the north London club in December after Andre Villas-Boas was fired after failing to gel a slew of expensive signings. Although the 45-year-old Sherwood was given an 18-month contract, it contained an end-of-season break clause that Tottenham has now exercised. Amid constant doubts over his future in charge, the clubs former head of football development won 13 out of 22 games in the league, where Tottenham finished sixth to qualify for the Europa League. "We wish him great success in his managerial career," Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said. "Moving forward, now the season is over, we shall embark on the process of finding a new head coach." In the 13 years that Levy has run Tottenham, the club has gone through seven permanent managers. Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with the Tottenham job in recent weeks, while Ajax coach Frank de Boer said last month that Tottenham had approached the Amsterdam club to test his interesst in making the switch.dddddddddddd Tottenham aspires to qualify for the Champions League again, having played one season alongside Europes elite in 2010-11. "We have a talented squad and exciting young players coming through," Levy said. "We need to build on this season, develop our potential and inspire the kind of performances that we associate with our great club." Some of the liveliest performances came on the touchline in the second half of the season, with Sherwood cutting a frantic figure, swearing and engaging with complaining fans. During Sherwoods final match, a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at White Hart Lane on Sunday, Sherwood plucked a heckling supporter from the crowd, handed him his sleeveless jacket and sat him down in the managers chair. "That guy is an expert," Sherwood said. "Every week he tells me what to do, so I gave him the opportunity to have a go." Tottenham didnt pose the same attacking threat without Gareth Bale, who was allowed to join Real Madrid in August for 100 million euros (then $132 million). The cash was invested in signing seven players, including Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen. SOCHI -- After the team photo had been snapped, after the Canadian players had taken off their game sweaters and pulled on their practice jerseys, Sidney Crosby and head coach Mike Babcock skated a few laps around the ice together and held what appeared to be a deep discussion. They looked each other in the eye. They made gestures with their hands. The two leaders were engaged. In fact, near the end of the conversation Babcock skated through a crease, while Crosby toured behind the net as a puck whizzed behind the back of the coachs head. He didnt even notice and kept on talking. “I think everybody has to adjust a little bit and was just making sure Im on the same page as far as what he expects and what he wants,” Crosby explained after Canadas second practice at the Bolshoy Ice Dome. “The offensive part and the skill that we have, I think that will come quicker then some of the adjustments we might make in the defensive zone. Defensive zone coverage was the topic of discussion between the two as they skated. Babcock and his coaching staff had shown the players a video in one of the many meetings the group has had since arriving in Sochi on Monday. Crosby wanted some clarification. “There was a little confusion there,” Babcock said. “We sorted it out. That gives me a chance tomorrow to sort it out with the group. “What weve tried to encourage is … if there is something as a player you dont feel or dont know, we encourage you to talk. The idea is to get everyone comfortable so we can play the game fast. When youre thinking you dont go fast. That was a good part of the process. Obviously, [Crosby] is a guy who is real comfortable and we want that from the captain. We want him to ask questions if there are any issues.” Crosby won a world junior title and steered the Rimouski Oceanic to a Memorial Cup final as a teenager. He was a Stanley Cup champion as a captain before his 22nd birthday and won an Olympic gold medal nine months later. Next chapter Now the 26-year-old Crosby has been asked to take over as captain for Scott Niedermayer, who had the captaincy in Vancouver four years ago, and write the next chapter in Canadian hockey leadership that stretches from the smooth-skating defenceman to Mario Lemieux and all the way back to Phil Esposito and beyond. ``I think youre much more used to things, youre a little wide-eyed that first time,” Crosby said. “The biggest thing I learned from a guy like Scotty is that he didnt really say that much, he just said the right thing at the right time. The way he carried himself and his whole demeanour that he had, his quiet confidence, it was really something that was felt throughout the whole room. ``The other thing here is that weve got a lot of guys who have played together not just the last Olympics but going back a ways, I think theres some trust there. And for the new guys coming in, you try to make them feel as comfortable as possible. Were trying to do that. Thats the strength of Canada, guys always come together pretty quick. Thats instilled in us at an early age. I like that side of things for sure. Niedermayer was 37 when he captained Canada to gold in 2010. He retired a few months later. Mario Lemieux was 36 when he captained Canada to gold in 2002. He retired before the next Olympics. Does age matter when it comes to Olympic hockey leadership? Babcock likes the fact that Crosby will be surrounded by all the returnees from the Vancouver team. “The reality for me is we have 11 guys back from the last time who had success,” he said. “We have a new opportunity and we have to come up with a new identity. Does experience help in winning? Absolutely. Does the Olympics weigh in more than the guy who has won a Stanley Cup, I dont know that? “I know I like guys who have won because theyve been through it and done it right. You dont win unless youve done it right. In the details is whats going to separate. There is a whole bunch of teams with really good players. Someone is going to become a really good team and win the tournament. Thats what were going to try to do. Were going to try to get better each and every day so we can win.” Cameron Meredith Jersey . INDIANAPOLIS -- Carl Edwards 11-year run with Roush-Fenway Racing will end after this NASCAR season. Roush confirmed the decision Sunday, a move that had been long expected but could not be substantiated because Edwards refuses to publicly discuss contract negotiations. Hes believed to be headed to Joe Gibbs Racing in a new fourth car, but his contract with Roush does not permit him to announce his plans until September. Matt Kenseth was bound by the same clause when he left Roush at the end of 2012 and had to wait months to announce he was moving to Gibbs. Edwards, speaking two hours before the start of the Brickyard 400, said he has a completed deal with another team but is not ready to talk about it. He also tried to limit his time discussing his departure from Roush because the start of Sundays race was approaching. "Right now, the mission is to win this championship, this race," Edwards said. "This is my decision, its a decision I made and I didnt take it lightly. Sometimes you just want to make a change, and opportunities present themselves and you say, Hey, what was that like to not take that opportunity? " With a move to Gibbs, Edwards will be reunited at a Toyota team with Kenseth, whom he didnt always get along with when they were Roush teammates. Minutes before the race, team owner Joe Gibbs declined to discuss Edwards but said a fourth car at the organization is possible. Leaving Roush ends Edwards long association with Ford. The manufacturer stepped up heavily in contract negotiations four years ago to offer incentives to keep Edwards from leaving Roush for Gibbs. "Carl Edwards has been a part of the Ford family for a decade, and it will certainly be tough to see him leave Ford and Roush Fenway Racing," said Jamie Allison, director of Ford Racing. "While we are disappointed in his decision to leave Roush Fenway Racing, we certainly want to extend our appreciation for Carls contributions." Edwards has been with Roush since 2003 and in the No. 99 Ford in the Cup Series since 2004. He has 67 career victories in NASCARs three national series. Edwards results have not been anywhere close to what he had hoped after losing the 2011 championship on a tiebreaker to Tony Stewart. Edwards went winless in 2012, his first year of a new three-year contract extension with Roush, and missed the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. Although he won two races last season, he finished last in the 13-driver Chase field. His performance is much better this year and Edwards goes into Sundays race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway ranked sixth in the standings with two victories. He said he does not want his departure to interfere with winning the Chase. "If you look around, not in the NASCAR world, but all of sports, change sometimes is a good thing from a performance standpoint," Edwards said. "You guys know what Ive been through from a competitive standpoint. Ive been really close as a driver to some championships, and I know what one point, one race can do. So the last thing Im going to do, or (the team) is going to do is let next year and beyond affect the championship." Roush disclosed its three-driver 2015 lineup: Greg Biffle and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will both return, and Trevor Bayne will move up from the Nationwide Series to a full-time Sprint Cup Series ride. "We have always prided ourselves in developing talent at Roush Fenway, and our 2015 lineup is a testament to the success of our organization in that respect," Jack Roush said. Biffle has been with Roush since 1998 and earned the organization its first NASCAR championship with the 2000 Truck Series crown. He added a Nationwide Series title in 2002. He has qualified for the Chase in five of the last six seasons and was a career-best second in 2005. "I dont have the words for what Jack Roush has meant to my career," Biffle said. "Our goal remains to run up front, win races and become the sports first triple crown winner by having a championship in all three series." Stenhouse, a two-time Nationwide Series champion, joined Roush Fenway in 2008. He replaced Kenseth in the No. 17 Ford when Kenseth left for Gibbs. Fastenal, one of the primary sponsors on Edwards car, will move its funding to Stenhouse next season to remain in the organization. Roush officials had previously announced that Bayne will be promoted from the Nationwide Series to a full-time Cup ride next year, with AdvoCare as his primary sponsor of the No. 6 Ford. Marcus Semiens seventh-inning grand slam lifted the White Sox over the Detroit Tigers 6-4 Wednesday night. It was the first career grand slam for the 23-year-old Semien, and it turned a two-run deficit into a two-run lead. "Everybody I think is buying into catering your at-bat to the situation," Konerko said. "I think everybodys really done a good job of ... having an awareness of where things are at in the game, the scoreboard, what the guys trying to do to me." Konerko had three hits for the White Sox, including an eighth-inning double that moved him past Frank Thomas atop the teams career total bases list. Jose Abreu hit another long home run for the White Sox, but it was Semiens slam that turned around the game. Detroit starter Drew Smyly allowed two runs in six innings, but Evan Reed (0-1) gave up two singles and a walk, and Ian Krol allowed the home run to Semien on a 3-1 pitch. "Kind of sitting dead red," Semien said. "He missed a couple up on me, and one of them I check swung, but that one was a little lower, and just got extended." Andre Rienzo (1-0) gave up four runs in the fourth inning, but kept the Tigers quiet otherwise in his first start this season. He allowed five hits and two walks in 6 1-3 innings, striking out three. Matt Lindstrom pitched the ninth for his third save, but it wasnt easy. He allowed a single, a walk and two deep flyouts before retiring Alex Avila on a line drive to first with runners on second and third. Austin Jackson homered for Detroit. With the Tigers ahead 4-2 in the seventh, Reed allowed a leadoff single to Konerko. Alejandro De Aza singled one out later, then Reed walked Tyler Flowers and was pulled. Krol retired Jordan Danks on a popup, but Semien followed with a drive to left that cleared the bases. "I threw a 3-1 fastball up in the zone, which is pretty much the exact pitch guys want to see on 3-1," Krol said. "I thhought about throwing a changeup, but I didnt want to walk him.dddddddddddd As it turned out, walking him would have been a much better move." Abreu opened the scoring in the first with a two-run shot, reaching the bushes beyond the wall in centre field at Comerica Park for the second time this series. Smyly was impressive after that; he would end up yielding six hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. Rienzo gave up the lead in the fourth, allowing a two-run single to J.D. Martinez and Jacksons two-run homer to left-centre. But the Tigers had only one more runner against Rienzo after the homer. The 25-year-old right-hander from Brazil had pitched only one inning this season, but Rienzo got the start Wednesday with Chicago starters Chris Sale and Felipe Paulino both injured. The 38-year-old Konerko raised his average to .217 with his big day at the plate, and he now leads the White Sox with 3,950 total bases, one more than Thomas. "Any time you hear franchise lead or something like that, thats cool," Konerko said. "It shows I got out there and played. Youve got to do well, but more than anything, you have to be out on the field to do it, so Ive always took pride in that." With one on in the ninth, Martinez came within a few feet of tying the game, but his drive off Lindstrom was caught in front of the wall in centre near the 420-foot marker. After a walk to Jackson, both runners moved up on Nick Castellanos flyout to deep right. Avila then swung at a 3-0 pitch, and his liner was caught by Abreu, who was guarding the line at first. VANCOUVER - Carl Robinson impressed in his first season as head coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps, but hes ready for more in 2015 and beyond.Robinson and his coaching staff signed multi-year contract extensions with the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday, with the Wales international saying that although he was pleased with his first season as a manager, he wants to lead the team to even greater heights.Ill be even more determined to work even harder next year because I think we can get even better than we were last year, said Robinson.Thats saying something, as Robinson led Vancouver to arguably its best-ever season in 2014.Under his guidance the Whitecaps reached the MLS Cup playoffs and hit the 50 point-mark — the club’s highest-ever point total in Major League Soccer and the most ever by a Canadian MLS club. The team also won the Cascadia Cup and qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League for the first time in club history. In just one year, Carl and his staff have done an exceptional job in establishing a foundation, bringing in quality players and people, and taking this team to the next level, said Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi in a statement. They are all highly respected not only within our club, but also around the league and the soccer world. We are confident that their eye for talent, dedication and hard work will continue to yield positive results.Assistant coaches Martyn Pert and Gordon Forrest, and goalkeeper coach Marius Rovde also agreed to contract extensions with Vancouver. Robinson sees these deals as an opportunity to further push and challenge his players.Just because I end up signing a multi-year deal doesnt mean that my foot comes off the gas, said Robinson. Ill actually be putting more pressure on the players now because we put a foundation in place which I think was pretty successful. But I dont want to be pretty successful, I want to be very successful. The hard work starts now.The 38-year-old Robinson was named Whitecaps head coach December 2013 after two years as an assistant. Robinson began his coaching career as a player/assistant coach in his second and final season with New York Red Bulls. Robinson also played three seasons with Toronto FC, where he served as the co-captain from 2007 to 2009, and was twice named the clubs most valuable player.Robinson knows that although hes seen a lot of success in Vancouver, he and his staff must continue to evolve to keep the Whitecaps competitive.Im not naive enough to think that theres not areas I need to improve on, that me and my coaches need to get better on, because players expect that, said Robinson. That certainly will happen this year. Therell be more demands put on them.Well continue to have a learning environment, a constructive environment, for these players to progress as well. ... Its important we grow together. The terms of the deals were not disclosed, as per club policy. When asked if the contract takes Robinson through his three-year plan or his five-year plan — an attempt by a reporter to find out the length of the deals — the Whitecaps manager laughed and said Itll take me past the next year, Ill give you that. Although Thurman couldnt match Matthysses pyrotechnics, the rising welterweight still managed a big finish. Thurman remained unbeaten Saturday night, stopping Diaz after three rounds when Diazs corner threw in the towel due to an injured rib. Thurman (23-0, 21 KOs), nicknamed "One-Time" for his one-punch knockout power, retained his WBA interim welterweight title. He floored Diaz in the second round before delivering the body shot that led Diaz to quit on his stool on a chilly night before the usual energized crowd at the outdoor ring south of Los Angeles. Although he had a short night, Thurman still demonstrated his formidable skill and power in his seventh fight in less than two years. "Hes a warrior, but he just couldnt take the punishment," Thurman said about Diaz. "No one knows the power of One-Time until they step in the ring with One-Time. We did the work in the gym. How did you think I was able to look this good?" A left to the temple dropped Diaz, although he stayed on his unsteady feet for a moment before taking a knee and getting up to beat the count. Thurman remembered the punch that evidently injured Diazs rib, but thought Diaz (40-10-1) had partially blocked it. "We were able to put that pain and that hurt on him like were supposed to," Thurman said. The main event was an anticlimax after a tenacious performance by Matthysse (35-3, 33 KOs), who overcame two early knockdowns and stopped Molina early in the 11th round of the Argentine 140-pound stars dynamite return to the ring. Matthysse knocked down the bleeding Molina in each of the final three rounds, culminating in a decisive combination. Matthysse hadnt fought since injuring his eye and losing a decision to 140-pound champion Danny Garcia last September, but he was right back in destructive form. "It did take me a few rounds to get going, but I was able to take control of the fight," Matthysse said.dddddddddddd "The knockdowns threw me off a little, but I was able to get my punches in." That defeat interrupted the rapid rise of the hard-punching Argentine known as "The Machine," and he returned with what many expected to be a simple fight against Molina (27-4), a Los Angeles-area fighter who infamously got knocked out in the first round of a title shot in 2012. But Molina showed he was no pushover from the opening round, knocking back Matthysse with a big right hand. Another chopping right out of a clinch in the second round sent Matthysse to his knees on just his second career knockdown. Although Matthysse controlled long stretches of the bout with his jab and power, he went down again late in the fifth after winning much of the round, dropping to his knees on a punch to the top of his head. Matthysse immediately indicated the punch was illegal in the back of his head, but referee Pat Russell ruled it a knockdown. "I thought I was going to get him out of there early, but he got it together," Molina said. "Theres a reason hes the No. 1 guy in the division. I took his shot all the way through, and I didnt feel it until the end." Despite a cut near his left eye, Matthysse kept using his jab and power against Molina, who had a large cut on the left side of his head. Matthysse then knocked down Molina late in the eighth round with a left hand and a possible push before punishing him throughout the ninth. Matthysse dropped Molina again in the 10th round with a combination on the ropes. Molina crumpled into the corner on a relentless barrage of punches early in the 11th, and Matthysse leaped on the ropes to celebrate. Omar Figueroa Jr. (23-0-1) also retained his WBC lightweight title with a dull split-decision victory over Jerry Belmontes. U.S. Olympians Joseph Diaz Jr. and Terrell Gausha both remained unbeaten on the undercard. DETROIT -- To no ones surprise, Patrice Bergeron, Jonathan Toews and Anze Kopitar are the finalists for the Selke Trophy, given to the NHLs best defensive forward. Bergeron of the Boston Bruins and Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks have each finished in the top three in voting for the past three seasons, and Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings was fourth last season. For Bergeron its an honour that underscores how much hes respected around the game for his two-way play. "I think youre always trying to work on things and I feel like the complete game is something that I take a lot of pride in and Im trying to work on," the Quebec City native said Thursday. "I think that this year I mean obviously I got the bounces offensively, but that being said it doesnt mean that I let the defensive part of the game out." Bergeron, who narrowly lost the 2013 Selke to Toews after winning it in 2012, has to be considered the favourite. His 1,015 faceoff victories were the most by any NHL player in the past seven seasons. "It makes you proud because you know hes well deserving of that, he has been for years now," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "Always up there in plus-minus, always plays against top players, and hes got 30 goals this year playing against top lines. I cant find a better candidate than him. Certainly deserves the nomination. Well see how it goes, but in our regards hes been the best." Toews, who thrived in a shutdown role as perhaps Team Canadas best forward at the Sochi Olympics, led the Blackhawks in ice time and won 57.2 per cent of his faceoffs. Kopitar played the most short-handed minutes of the leagues top 30 scorers and keyed the Kings top-rated defensive effort. Hes the first player in Los Angeles franchise history to be a Selke finalist. Detroits Pavel Datsyuk, a finalist last year and the winner in 2008, 2009 and 2010, missed a big chunk of this season with a knee injury. Air Max Saldi Italia . Racing around the bases as if his two-run homer in the ninth inning was still in play, Bourn was mobbed by his teammates when he reached home plate as the Cleveland Indians completed a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies with a 6-4 win on Sunday. "I was pretty excited," said Bourn, who threw his helmet into the air after rounding third before being doused with water. "I was flying around the bases. I was happy not just because I hit a walk-off, but that we got the sweep against a good team. It was a really good moment I wont forget. My emotions were really going." Bourn hit an 0-1 pitch into the right-field seats off Adam Ottavino (0-2). Mike Aviles singled and took second on George Kottaras sacrifice before Bourn hit his second home run of the season. The walk-off win was Clevelands fourth of the season. "In that situation you just look for a pitch to hit, and when you get one to hit you have to make sure you hit it," Bourn said. Scott Atchison (2-0) worked around a two-out double in the ninth by striking out Charlie Blackmon to end the inning. Colorado completed a 2-7 road trip and has lost four straight for the first time since last September. The Rockies lost two of three in Atlanta and Philadelphia before being swept away by the Indians. "We battled and we came up short," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "Thats the way it went again today. A timely hit sometimes can change a game, but weve had a hard time getting it this whole trip. If you dont take advantage, it will come back and haunt you. It did again." The Rockies fell to .500 for the first time since April 20 when they were 10-10. Colorado is 12-21 on the road. Josh Tomlin allowed three runs and matched a career high with eight strikeouts in 5 2-3 innings. He left with a 4-3 lead, but Blackmons sacrifice fly off Bryan Shaw tied the game in the seventh. Lonnie Chisenhall, who had six RBIs in the series, broke a 3-all tie in the third with a sacrifice fly. Jhoulys Chacin allowed four runs in five innings. The Indians scored three runs on one hit -- Michael Brantleys RBI single -- in the first. A bases-loaded walk to Jason Giambi and David&nbbsp;Murphys sacrifice fly scored the other runs.dddddddddddd Chacin created his own problems in the inning by walking three and committing a throwing error. Aviles RBI single in the eighth gave Cleveland a 7-6 win Saturday and a four-run inning was the key in Fridays 5-2 victory. Indians manager Terry Francona believes his team is finally producing some timely hits. "Were getting them, and were doing better situationally too," he said. "Its a lot easier when you keep the line moving like weve been doing, when you take your walks, like we did in the first inning. For a while there we had nobody hot." Corey Dickerson hit a two-run homer in the second. Justin Morneaus RBI groundout tied the game in the third. Brantleys leadoff double started the Indians third. He took third on a fly ball and scored on Chisenhalls fly out to right. Brandon Barnes leadoff double and a walk to Jordan Pacheco started the seventh. After a sacrifice, Blackmons fly ball scored Barnes, who slid home ahead of Bourns throw. Colorados key hitters struggled during the trip. Carlos Gonzalez reached on a bunt single to start the eighth, but was 2 for 20 in nine games. Troy Tulowitzki broke an 0-for-13 streak with a third-inning single, but ended the trip in a 3-for-23 slump. Colorado, the highest-scoring offence in the National League, managed only 26 runs on the trip, and struck out 38 times in this series. "We had to pitch well," Tomlin said. "Thats a good-hitting team." Chisenhall, normally a third baseman, made his first career start at first base. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Eleven days after he was released by the Baltimore Orioles, Steve Pearce was a huge reason they beat Tampa Bay. Pearce hit a two-run homer and made a game-saving defensive play Thursday night in Baltimores 3-1 victory over the Rays. Pearce, who re-signed with the Orioles two days after his April 27 release, hit his second homer in three games. Ubaldo Jimenez (2-4) won his second straight start as Baltimore completed a three-game sweep. The home run by Pearce came off David Price after J.J. Hardys double in the second inning. Playing first base in place of injured slugger Chris Davis, Pearce also made an outstanding stretch to catch a throw from Hardy that completed an inning-ending double play in the fifth. "Stevie may have made the defensive play of the night," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. Rays manager Joe Maddon challenged the call, but the ruling that Pearce kept his foot on the bag was confirmed after a 2-minute review. "The bases were loaded at the time, so if that got past me it could have cleared the bases," said Pearce, who had to wait for the replay decision to be sure the call was right. "It happened so fast and when you look, youre not on the bag anymore, so it depends on what happens." Nick Markakis extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the Baltimore third. Evan Longoria hit a two-out RBI single in the first off Jimenez, who pitched 5 1-3 innings for his second win after going 0-4 in his first month with the Orioles. "Im really happy April is gone," Jimenez said. "Now its May and everything is good." Singles by Adam Jones, Pearce and Jonathan Schoop produced Baltimores final run in the fourth. Darren ODay worked the ninth for his second save. The Rays have scored only eight runs in losing five straight games to Baltimore. They left 11 runners on base in this one. "Our goal right now is to figure out a way to get through it," Longoria said. "We all want to win. We all want to do our part. When it doesnt work out, its definitely frustrating." Price (3-3) gave up nine hits and three runs while striking out three in five-plus innings. It was the 16th time in their last 23 games that a Rays starting pitcher has failed to pitch into the sixth inning. Tampa Bay pitching coach Jim Hickey was ejected in the first inning for arguing a checked swing by Jones. BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Michael Allen was prouder of the 3-under 69 he shot Saturday than his record-tying 60 the day before. A day after making the game look so easy when he was the ninth player to shoot 60 on the Champions Tour, Allen fought his swing from the opening drive at Broken Sound. He fell out of the lead after playing his first 10 holes in 1 over, but birdied four of his last eight holes to take a one-stroke lead over Scott Dunlap and Chien Soon Lu in the Allianz Championship. "This is one of those rounds I really feel good about," said Allen, who is at 15-under 129 entering the final round. " "I knew if I hung in there, eventually the birdies would start coming." Allen has a more difficult task to win for the sixth time on the 50-and-over tour. With calm, warm condition on The Old Course, the field combined for a scoring average of 69.67, the lowest in the eight-year history of the event. Allen had only one player -- Dunlap -- within four shots of his lead after the first round. Now, there are seven players within four shots entering Sundays final round. "All I did was make it a good tournament," Allen said, smiling. "At least I know what I have to do now -- be aggressive from the start." Lu shot his second straight 65, and Dunlap followed his opening 63 with a 67. Neither Allen nor Dunlap won on the PGA Tour, but Dunlap is playing in just his second Champions Tour event. "I didnt use up a lot of great golf on the PGA Tour," said Dunlap, whose best showing in 204 career PGA Tour starts was a third-place finish. "It would be nice to think that door (of winning) hasnt closed." Duffy Waldorf was fourth at 13 under after a 63. He played the front nine in 7-under 29. HAVANA, Cuba -- Could a new wave of Cuban baseball players be headed for the major leagues without having to defect from the communist island? Cuba announced Friday that athletes from all sports will soon be able to sign contracts with foreign leagues, a break with a decades-old policy that held pro sports to be anathema to socialist ideals. Its a step toward the day when the road from Havana to Yankee Stadium might mean simply hopping on a plane rather than attempting a perilous sea crossing or sneaking out of a hotel at midnight in a strange land. But American baseball fans shouldnt throw their Dodgers or Rockies caps in the air in celebration just yet. The Cold War-era embargo against Cuba means it may not happen anytime soon. If it does come to pass, it could increase -- astronomically, in some cases -- the amount of money Cuban baseball players can earn. Athletes wages are not made public in Cuba but are believed to be somewhere around the $20 a month that most other state employees earn -- a tiny fraction of the millions many U.S. big leaguers make. "Its the dream of many athletes to test themselves in other leagues -- the big leagues, if at some point my country would allow it," said Yasmani Tomas, who is one of Cubas top talents, batting .345 last season with the powerhouse Havana Industriales. Under the new policy, athletes will be eligible to play abroad as long as they fulfil their commitments at home, the Communist Party newspaper Granma reported. For baseball players, that means being available for international competitions as well as Cubas November-to-April league. "We have seen the press reports. This is an internal Cuban matter," Deputy State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said. "Generally speaking, the United States welcomes any reforms that allow Cubans to depart from and return to their country." Major League Baseball said the impact of Fridays announcement cant be predicted. "Given that we do not have any details of this change in policy, it would be premature for us to speculate what effect it may have," the commissioners office said in a statement. "There are no provisions in the major league rules or bylaws that make it more difficult for Cuban ballplayers to play Major League Baseball, but MLB and its clubs have and will continue to act in accordance with the laws and policies of the United States government." President Raul Castros government hopes the move will stem defections by athletes who are lured abroad by the possibility of lucrative contracts, a practice that saps talent from Cubas teams. "I think this could help stop the desertions a little bit," said Yulieski Gourriel, a talented 29-year-old third baseman who batted .314 last year for Sancti Spiritus. "I dont even want to talk about how much Ive been offered, because every time we leave the country, there are these offers. Ive never paid attention because Ive always said Im not interested." A number of his countrymen, however, are interested. Cuban defectors now in the major leagues include outfielder Yasiel Puig, who signed a $42 million, seven-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in July 2012 and had a sensational rookie season, helping Los Angeles win its division. Hard-throwing reliever Aroldis Chapman signed a $30.25 million, six-year deal with Cincinnati before the 2010 season. If the policy change comes to pass, "its good for Cuba, for everybody, for the players -- more people in the big leagues, more experience for international tournaments," said Milwaukee Brewers infielder Yuniesky Betancourt, a Cuban defector who left his homeland aboard a speedboat in 2003. Texas Rangers outfielder Leoyns Martin was surprised Friday when told about the news "Really? Oh my gosh," said Martin, wearing his Cuba Baseball jacket from the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Martin defected after playing for Cubas national team in a 2010 tournament in Japan. "I dont want to talk about that," Martin said. "Thats a long history in my life." Professional sports were essentially done away with under Fidel Castro in 1961, two years after the Cuban revolution, and athletes became state employees just like factory workers and farmhands. Sport as private enterprise was deemed incompatible with the Marxist society Castro intended to create. In 2005, he railed against the "parasites that feed off the athletes hard work" in professional sports. Fridays announcement is part of a trend toward relaxing that stance under Castros brother, who became president in 2006. Earlier this year, Cuba ended a five-decade ban on professional boxing, joining an international semipro league where fighters compete for sponsored teams and earn $1,000 to $3,000 a month. Still, the biggest obstacle to, say, Tomas likeness showing up on a bobblehead doll in a major league park someday may lie not in Cuba, but in the U.S. Granma reported that Cuban athletes will have to pay taxes on any earnings from foreign clubs, an apparent conflict with the 51-year-old American embargo that outlaws nearly all U.S. transactions with Cuba unless they are specifically licensed by Washington. The economic restrictions were imposed after Cuba nationalized American businesses and aligned itself with the Soviet Union. They have been kept in place to try to pressure the authoritarian country to allow its people more freedom. "Our policy has not changed. Cuban players need to be unblocked by a license from the Office of Foreign Assets Control in order to play for the MLB," said John Sullivan, spokesman for the U.S. Treasury Departments Office of Foreign Assets Control. "In order to qualify, the players must prove that they have permanent residency outside of Cuba." Cuban players who defect establish residency in another country and become free agents, eligible for any major league organization to sign. While residents of the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada are the only ones currently subject to baseballs amateur draft, MLB management hopes to start an international draft in the next labour contract, which would start in 2017. In the interim, MLB and the union last year started a system of restraints on signing bonuses for international players. "The Basic Agreement is unclear as to whether theyd be subject to the international signing limits," said Jay Reisinger, an agent and lawyer for several major leaguers. Even if Cubans have trouble playing in the U.S., they might still be able to take the field in Mexico, Japan, Venezuela or other countries during their off-season, something that has happened in a few instances. Also Friday, Granma announced raises for island athletes, including bonuses for individual and team achievement. For example, in baseball, league leaders in hitting and other categories will get an extra $41. The team that wins the title will split $2,700. Thats small change by big-league standards, but sizeable in Cuba. "The pay raise is going to be a big help. It was time," Tomas said. "I think if wed done it even earlier, some athletes would not have left." Puma Shoes Online Sale . PETERSBURG, Fla. WINNIPEG - It appears the honeymoon is over between the Winnipeg Jets and their fans. Once rare game tickets at the MTS Centre are available, and those who attend have booed their 16-18-5 team for inconsistent play that has the club sitting at or near the bottom of their new, tough Central Division. Armchair general managers have also called for roster changes to the transplanted ex-Atlanta Thrashers team, while likeable head coach Claude Noel has had his job security questioned. And the fans arent the only ones voicing their frustration. Players are fed up with looking for the positives in each loss. "Its what you do out on the ice. You can blow smoke as much as you want in the media," right-winger Blake Wheeler told reporters after the Jets lost a sixth straight game at home on Dec. 14. "Weve been blowing smoke for three years – everyone, myself. Everyone thats stood in front of a microphone for the last three years, weve said the same (expletive)." The airing out of frustrations in Winnipeg is something new. When the Jets were resurrected in 2011, fans enthusiastically embraced the return of the NHL after a 15-year absence. Thirteen thousand season tickets with a minimum three-year commitment were snapped up, and unlucky fans paid $50 to join a wait list. The team was loudly cheered by 15,000 grateful admirers at home games, and were even given a standing ovation when the inaugural season ended with an overtime loss and no playoff berth. After last seasons NHL lockout ended, fans were just happy to head back to the rink and their adoration continued despite another campaign without post-season action. But in this third season, cracks are starting to show. When the home winless streak finally ended with a 5-2 victory over Florida on Dec. 20, there was relief, but no fist pumping as the team headed out on the road for what ended up being losses to Vancouver and Edmonton before its three-day Christmas holiday. Before boarding the plane for the road trip, Wheeler was asked if he senses the marriage with fans is hitting rocky times. "I think the expectations have risen every year," he said. "We took a step last year and we just missed the playoffs. I think a lot of us felt we were a playoff team. "And now, I think this is the best group weve had since weve been here so I think the expectations have risen pretty linearly since weve been here. "(The scrutiny) comes with the territory. Its a market that cares about the product on the ice and theyre very passionate. Theyre very enthusiastic when youre winning and very enthusiastic when youre losing, its just a different kind." Jets defenceman Zach Bogosian got a different view of fans when he recently missed 15 games with a groin injury. Did he feel the winds of change while sitting in the press box? "Its a touchy subject," Bogosian said. "Theyre usually pretty loud, but sometimes if the team is not playing as well as we should, some people get unhappy." Behind his mask, goalie Ondrej Pavelec hasnt noticed more unforgiving fans this season. "They cheer for us every time," he said. "Sometimes we play bad, we dont deserve it and theyre still there. I dont see any difference." He and Wheeler havent been sought out by fault-finding fans. "The people are all very respectful," Wheeler said. "When people see us out and about, theyre happy to see us out in the community. "The wins and losses are obviously very important, but at the same time were still people. Theres nobody that wants it more than we do in this locker-room. Its just a matter of going out there and doing it." Noel acknowledged fans have higher expectations this season. "I think weve had that sense for a while," he said. "After the first year, we had that sense that they would like more performance and the honeymoon is over. "We dont sit here and take our fan base for granted. They expect us to work, and they should, and perform." Prior to Winnipegs loss to the lowly Sabres in Buffalo earlier this month, Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff revealed hes felt heat from critics. "If youre able to find a way to improve, then you try to act on it," he said. "But change doesnt always equate to improvement. "Change can certainly placate phone calls, emails on the different venues out there, but that doesnt necessarily mean thats the proper direction to go." Cheveldayoff, who extended Noels contract earlier this year through the 2014-15 season, was also asked if Noel is doing a good job. "Coaching in this league is a tough job," Cheveldayoff said. "Theres lots of second-guessing that goes on everywhere. "And thats the nature of it when youre in the public eye like this. Everyones got their own interpretation of whether someones doing a good job, not doing a good job. At the end of the day, I know that (all the coaches are) working hard and doing all they can." MIAMI -- Christian Yelich was confident he was safe at home even if home plate umpire Ed Hickox called him out. Replay backed him up. Adeiny Hechavarria immediately followed the ruling with a go-ahead sacrifice fly for the Miami Marlins, who held on to beat the Seattle Mariners 3-2 on Sunday completing a three-game sweep. "I thought I beat it from the get-go and then I saw him call me out, I kind of started yelling at him a little bit telling him I was safe," Yelich said. "If we didnt have replay right there, its a 2-1 game and we got two outs so it was huge. It was a big win for us." Yelich led off the inning with a double that extended his hitting streak to 14 games. He scored the tying run. Steve Cishek made it interesting in the ninth, allowing a leadoff double to Corey Hart. Hechavarria then made a diving stop at shortstop and a spinning throw to nab Dustin Ackley at first base preventing pinch-runner Brad Miller from scoring. "That was a game-saver," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "Thats why I feel that guy is the best shortstop in the league. Im glad hes on our team. That was a huge play." Cishek struck out Nick Franklin and Michael Saunders to end the game for his third save and 32nd consecutive conversion. A crowd of 20,208 took in the first day game this season at Marlins Park with the retractable roof open. It was 78 degrees when the game began and shadows partially covered the infield when the game ended. "Shadows came over the infield, which makes it tough for hitters, but at the same time, too, we mounted our rally with the shadows," Redmond said. "Maybe were shadow-friendly." Mike Dunn (1-2) pitched a scoreless eighth for the Marlins, who have won four of five. Tom Wilhelmsen (0-1) took the loss for the Mariners, which lost their sixth straight. "Things just arent going well right now, but thats okay; well get out of this," Wilhelmsen said. "We have a much better team than what were showing." After Giancarlo Stanton and Casey McGehee were walked by Wilhelmsen to load the bases in the eighth with one out, Garrett Jones hit a groundball to first baseman Justin Smoak, whos throw home was late allowing Yelich to score the tying run. "I fielded it and threw it, but (Yelich) just got a heck of a jump," Smoak said. "It was a bang-bang play." Redmond immediately jumped out of the dugout to challenge the call, which was overturned after a delay of 2 minutes, 20 seconds. It was the second time replay was used in the series, which benefitted the Marlins. During Fridays game, replay determined that third baseman Kyle Seeger bobbled the ball during a transfer leaving the Marlins with the based loaded in the ninth before Giancarlo Stanton cleared them with a game-winning grand slam. "Its worked out well for us over the last couple of games, thats for sure," Redmond said. Seattle led 2-0 on a pair of sacrifice flies by Smoak and Ackley. Mariners starter Brandon Maurer held the Marlins without a hit until the fifth inning when Jones reached base on an infield single. Donnavan Solano ended Maurers outing two batters later with an RBI single to pull the Marlins to 2-1. Maurer allowed one run, two hits, and two walks in 4 1-3 innings in his season debut. "He was tired; he was exhausted," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "We knew that was going to be a pitch-count (situation) anyway. He did good in the time he was in there." Miamis Kevin Slowey pitched five innings allowing two runs. Japan sealed its victory over Canada in the first-round Davis Cup tie after Nishikori downed an ailing Dancevic 6-2, 1-0.BROSSARD, Que. -- Balancing the defence and making room for younger leaders marked the opening day of NHL free agency for the Montreal Canadiens. General manager Marc Bergevin acquired defenceman Tom Gilbert and re-signed rearguard Mike Weaver on Tuesday to fix the right-hand-left-hand balance at the blue-line, along with inking centre Manny Malhotra to add a veteran faceoff ace and penalty killer for the fourth line. He also shocked many fans by trading defenceman Josh Gorges, an alternate captain, to Buffalo and then letting captain Brian Gionta go to the Sabres as a free agent. Bergevin had said after the Canadiens were eliminated in the Eastern Conference final that the teams leadership had shifted to younger players like P.K. Subban, Max Pacioretty, Carey Price and Brandan Gallagher. Seeing off Gorges and Gionta made it official. "We felt that with our performance during the playoffs, our young core was ready to take a bigger role when it comes to leadership," said Bergevin, who refused to speculate on who the next captain may be. "Eventually you need to give your young players a chance to take over that role." Bergevin may have other moves planned, but his next task will be signing Subban, the 2013 Norris Trophy winner as the leagues top defenceman who is now a restricted free agent. Subban is expected to ink a long-term deal for top dollars. But the clubs main goal was to rearrange the defence. The addition of Gilbert will allow left-shooting Alexei Emelin to move to the left side where he will likely be more effective, while Weaver will probably play right defence in a pairing with one of the teams young prospects like Nathan Beaulieu, Jarred Tinordi or Greg Pateryn. That would allow coach Michel Therrien to pair his two top rearguards, Subban and Andrei Markov. "Were more balanced now," said Bergevin. The parting with Gorges was awkward. News leaked out last week that the veteran was not only on the block, but had refused to waive his no-trade clause to complete a deal with the rival Toronto Maple Leafs. Gorges added a couple of teams to the list of acceptable destinations, and was sent just before free agency opened to Buffalo for a 2016 second round draft pick. Bergevin was not pleased with how it unfolded. "It was difficult, hes a very good person," he said. "The fact the information got out was disappointing for us and for him. "No player should have to go through that. It was stressful for him and his family. Thats why I dont talk about trades in public. You see what happened. I have no idea where it came out from, but I can guarantee it did not come from the Montreal Canadiens organization." Gorges said he was shocked by the deal. A Canadien since 2006, he was seen as a heart and soul defenceman and a leader who was always willing to sacrifice his body to help the team. The Kelowna, B.C. native said he couldnt bring himself to play against Montreal in a Toronto (or Boston) jersey, and was relieved to go to a young, rebuilding squad in Buffalo. "Its been a tough couple of days and now things are looking bright again," Gorges said on a conference call. "You know where youre going and thats a good feeling." Bergevin was looking to movve Gorges contract, which had been signed with the previous management and has another four seasons at US$3.dddddddddddd9 million per year. He reportedly made a bid to keep Gionta, but at a much reduced salary from the $5 million the right winger earned in each of the least seasons. The Rochester, N.Y. native ended up signing with Buffalo for three years at $4.2 million per season. "Youre losing great people," said Bergevin. "Sometimes you make decisions that are not popular. But Im not here to be popular, Im here to make decisions." On Monday, he also traded veteran centre Daniel Briere to Colorado for right winger P.A. Parenteau. It still left Montreal short a right winger, but Bergevin said the spot on the second or third line will likely be taken a by a young player, possibly a newcomer like Jakob de la Rose, Sven Andrighetto or Jiri Sekac. The much-sought after Sekac, a six-foot 175 pound Czech, inked a two-year, two-way deal with Montreal after reportedly talking to more than 15 NHL teams. "Hes a kid that has top-three line skill that can help at some point in the future," said Bergevin. "I wont be able to tell you until hes here at camp and he shows us what he can do. We felt it was a calculated risk to bring him to Montreal." Gilbert, an unrestricted free agent, signed a two-year deal worth $2.8 million. The 31-year-old, who was bought out of the final two years of a contract with Minnesota in 2012, played for Florida on a one-year deal last season. He had three goals and 25 assists in 73 games. "For me, a lot of it has to do with skating and getting the puck and making that first pass," said Gilbert, who had hoped to sign with Montreal last year but couldnt get a deal. Instead, he saw his Panthers teammate Weaver get traded to the Canadiens on March 4 and earn a new one-year $1.75 million contract by helping them to reach the conference final. Now the two are together again. "He sent me a text asking me why Im chasing him around," Gilbert joked. "Hes going to fit in great with the team," Weaver said of Gilbert. "Hopefully he cuts his hair a bit shorter, but the way he plays, I notice, is almost similar to what we do. Short little passes into the zone to break out. "Hes going to bring a wealth of knowledge and experience." Malhotra signed a one-year deal worth $850,000. The 34-year-old centre, who has come back from a career-threatening eye injury suffered in 2011, had seven goals and six assists in 69 games with the Carolina Hurricanes last season. While he still has reduced vision in his left eye, Malhotra was praised for his leadership and his ability to win faceoffs. He probably could have got more money on the open market, but wanted to play for a contender. "At this stage of my career, the most important thing for me is winning," he said. "You look at the season the Canadiens had last year and the way theyve been growing as a team and the pieces they have in place, to be able to be part of something like that means a lot to me, rather than trying to chase a few extra dollars in a place where I probably wouldnt be as happy hockey-wise. "To say its a great hockey market is a gross understatement. Im really looking forward to being a part of it." Englewood, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Denver Broncos have picked up the fifth-year option on the contract of linebacker Von Miller, which keeps the 2011 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year under team control through 2015. Miller is slated to earn $9.754 million in 2015, the final year of his rookie deal, though the salary is guaranteed for injury only. The move was not unexpected, as the 25-year-old has emerged as one of the leagues premier pass rushers since being taken by Denver with the No. 2 overall pick of the 2011 draft. Miller racked up 11 1/2 sacks as a rookie, then tallied 18 1/2 along with six forced fumbles while earning first team All-Pro honors in his second season. He is coming off a difficult 2013 campaign, however, as he sat out the first six games for violating the NFLs substance abuse policy and missed the entire postseason after tearing his ACL in late December. He finished with 34 tackles, five sacks and three forced fumbles in nine regular-season contests. Mike Remmers Jersey . The Stars not only made their dads happy Tuesday night, they secured a key victory that improved their playoff chances. Antoine Roussel scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period, Kari Lehtonen stopped 26 shots and the Stars beat the sluggish Phoenix Coyotes 3-1 in front of 27 dads who took advantage of the franchises father road trip. "This is a little extra bonus," Lehtonen said of having his pop in the stands. "Its nice to have him here." Shawn Horcoff also scored and Ryan Garbutt added an empty-netter for the Stars, who won their second straight game and moved within one point of Phoenix and two of Vancouver, which holds the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Not bad for a team that less than a month ago was mired in a six-game losing streak. "It was a big win for us tonight," Garbutt said. "We had the dads in town and it was a fun game for the guys to play. Its kind of nice for the guys to be on a roll right now." Antoine Vermette scored his eighth goal in nine games and Mike Smith made 37 saves for the Coyotes, who were thoroughly outplayed in the final two periods despite the games importance. "It was really disappointing," Vermette said. "We have to find a way to win these games." Tied at 1 entering the third period despite a 31-18 edge in shots, the Stars took advantage of a bad line change and Kyle Chipchuras turnover at centre ice. The sequence ended with Roussels wrist shot from between the circles that beat Smith on the glove side at 3:25 for his ninth goal. "We turned over a lot of pucks and in the 1-on-1 battles just didnt do enough to give ourselves a better chance to win," Phoenix coach Dave Tippett said. It was another solid defensive effort for the Stars, three nights after blanking NHL-leading Anaheim 2-0 at the beginning of a three-game trip. When they arrived in Phoenix, so did most of the players fathers. They watched the Super Bowl together Sundayy and visited a dude ranch Monday.dddddddddddd The fathers then had great seats for Dallas fifth win in seven games and a big victory against another team jockeying for a playoff spot. Phoenix entered the night in ninth place in the West with 62 points, while Dallas was 10th with 59. With eight teams going to the playoffs and Vancouver losing at Boston earlier in the evening, Tuesdays meeting and Saturdays rematch in Dallas meant an opportunity to create space and clinch the season series. "We talked about this morning that two teams that are pretty similar and tight, somebodys going to take advantage of an opportunity and win a game," Dallas coach Lindy Ruff said. "And I thought we were able to push through." Perhaps not surprisingly, there was little to separate the teams in the first period. And while the Stars had better chances early in the second, it was Vermette who continued his hot streak with a breakaway goal midway through the period to put Phoenix ahead. Vermette won the puck along the boards at centre ice and skated in alone, sending a backhander past Lehtonen at 9:18 to make it 1-0. It was Vermettes team-best 21st goal. Shortly after Vermette nearly scored another breakaway goal while short-handed, and with the Phoenix crowd booing what it felt should have been a Dallas penalty, the Stars tied it. Horcoffs no-look backhander from the slot on the power play slipped past Smith with 7:28 left in the second period. Dallas controlled the final period, with Garbutts empty-net goal with 26.7 seconds left putting it away and setting up a happy postgame reunion with the dads. "I think the ones whose sons scored are especially proud of them," Ruff said. "And they get to see it live. That part is good." In Canadian football, the potential of the games greatest players isnt always obvious during the early stages of their careers.  And Anthony Calvillo is no exception. He came to the CFL in the most unusual of circumstances, the 21-year-old quarterback of a CFL expansion team in Las Vegas that spent its one and only season playing before crowds that resembled friends and family.  That first season, he completed 44 per cent of his passes and threw more interceptions than touchdowns while the team stumbled to a 5-13 record and then folded. Had Calvillo hung up his cleats right then and there, no one would have blamed him. And no one would have remembered him, either.  At that time, he was about as anonymous as a CFL player could be.  All of which makes more remarkable the journey hes taken over the past 20 years, retiring as the all-time leading passer in pro football history, three Grey Cup rings and a legacy in Canadian football that is virtually unmatched. The lesson of Anthony Calvillos career is that those who become stars in the Canadian game are rarely those who possess eye-popping physical attributes, or who arrive with bona fide star power. They are, instead, usually players whose full skill sets arent obvious right away, requiring a combination of humility, determination, patience and smarts to reach their potential. And in Calvillos case, he needed every one of those qualities to get him to the top.  Calvillos time in Las Vegas was followed by a move to Hamilton for three seasons where he served primarily as backup quarterback for the Tiger-Cats, followed by two more with Montreal where he once again played the understudy, this time under CFL great, Tracy Ham.  If there was greatness ahead of him at that time, only Calvillo would have known it.  Yet six years into his professional career, following Hams retirement after the 1999 season, Calvillo took the reins in Montreal looking like someone whod been succeeding at the Canadian game all his life.  It turns out Calvillo had made good use of those first half-dozen years in the league, refining his craft, learning from his own mistakes and those of others, quietly turning himself into someone who was ready and able to engineer a CFL offence.  When his time came to become a starter with Montreal, he was meticulous and calm, the consummate professional who could command respect from those around him with his approach to the game and unmatched level of preparedness.  Had his success come earlier in his career, Calvillo might not have lasted as long as he did in the CFL.  But when the National Football League comes looking for players in Canada, it tends to value youth and overhwelming physical skills. To appreciate Anthony Calvillo, you couldnt just look at tape or watch him at a workout. You had to see him game-in and game-out to understand the consistency, how rarely his instincts betrayed him and what a winner he was. That recogntion didnt come quickly in Canada either, however. Consider that when TSN did its Top 50 all-time players list in 2006, a survey of football media from across the country, Calvillos name wasnt on it.  It wasnt truly until the final half-dozen years of his career that Calvillo began to receive his due as one of the leagues all-time greats, as the success he accumulated year after year became impossible to ignore.  Calvillo is the last player to have played for a U.S. expansion team to retire, closing the book on that desperate chapter of CFL history but at the same time reminding us it wasnt all bad.  If it werent for the Las Vegas Posse, would Calvillo have ever played in the CFL? And even if he had surfaced elsewhere in the league, would his journey somehow have turned out differently? Its been a great ride for Anthony Calvillo, the rare CFL player who retires as a nationally recognized name in Canada. From the unlikeliest of beginnings to the highest of accolades, he earned everything he got along the way. Carlos Gomez extended his hitting streak to 17 games to help the Brewers improve to 5-1 on their seven-game trip. Peralta (8-5) went 7 2-3 solid innings and allowed four runs, three earned. He gave up a two-run single to Justin Morneau in the first and then shut down the leagues best offence until Corey Dickersons two-run homer in the sixth. Christian Friedrich (0-1) lasted six innings and surrendered nine runs, four earned, in his season debut. He was betrayed by his defence as the Rockies committed a season-high four errors. Friedrich is the 11th starting pitcher the Rockies have used this season. The 26-year-old lefty, who missed most of last season due to back inflammation, was 1-8 with a 7.89 ERA for Triple-A Colorado Springs before being recalled. Ramirez had his second straight three-hit day. His solo homer in the fifth was his ninth of the season. Mark Reynolds and Gomez also added two hits. Third baseman Josh Rutledge had two errors in the frame, and second baseman DJ LeMahieu had another trying to turn a double play. Friedrich sent a pitch past McKenry, who quickly tracked the ball down on the right side of the plate and tossed to Friedrich covering home. The ball sailed over Friedrichs head, allowing Ramirez to score from third and Reynolds from second as the ball rolled toward the Brewers dugout. (SportsNetwork.com) - The Memphis Grizzlies have established themselves as the best in the West and will put their impressive start to the test Wednesday against Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center. Memphis will also visit Portland, Sacramento and Houston on the upcoming road trip and have dropped back-to-back road games following a 4-0 start away from home. The Grizzlies defeated LAs other team, the Clippers, on Sunday by a 107-91 score and were led by Marc Gasol, who had 30 points on 13-of-18 shooting, and grabbed 12 rebounds. Courtney Lee and Tony Allen scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, for Memphis, which shot 49.4 percent and had a 52-32 rebounding advantage. The 12-2 start matches the best start in franchise history (2012-13). Just a good solid win, Memphis coach Dave Joerger said. It was very physical and I thought we kept our composure.
