The Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies could be talking a blockbuster involving Jose Bautista. According to Howard Eskin of FOX Philadelphia and WIP Radio, the two teams are in serious talks on a deal that would see the four-time All Star and two-time home run champion return to the Senior Circuit and the Phillies. It is believed that outfielder Domonic Brown and more would head back to the Blue Jays. The 33-year-old Bautista has two years remaining on a five-year, $64 million deal with an option for another season. Durability has been a concern in recent years for the Dominican-born slugger. Bautista missed 70 games in 2012 with a left wrist injury and a left hip bruise saw his 2013 season end on September 4th. Brown is coming off of a breakout year for the Phillies where he hit .272 with 27 home runs and 83 RBI. The 26-year-old was named an All-Star for his efforts. Brown becomes arbitration-eligible following the 2014 season. If the Phillies were to acquire Bautista, he could be used primarily at third base as Philadelphia brought aboard OF Marlon Byrd on a two-year deal on Tuesday. Authentic Jameer Nelson Jersey . The Winnipeg Goldeyes (16-9) came back from all of that in a 7-6 walk-off victory over the Grand Prairie AirHogs (10-15) Tuesday night at Shaw Park before 5,549 fans. The win pulls the Goldeyes within half-a-game of the St. Paul Saints for first place in the American Associations North Division. Grand Prairie took a big lead by scoring five runs with two out in the top of the second inning, which was highlighted by a three-run home run by Palmer Karr Jr. After that though, Salamida settled in and gave Winnipeg a chance to get back into the game. The Goldeyes started their climb in the bottom of the third when Ryan Pineda singled in Josh Mazzola, who reached first base on an error. Following two scoreless innings, the Goldeyes tied the game in the sixth inning. With one run in, Donnie Webb hit a two-run home run off the Manitoba Hydro superboard in right-centre field. Four batters later, Pineda singled in Mazzola again, as the Goldeyes belted out six hits in the inning. The Goldeyes missed a glorious opportunity by leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, but Casey Haerther erased that memory with a leadoff solo home run an inning later. It was his first home run of the season. “I was seeing it pretty well tonight,” Haerther said.dddddddddddd “The one I hit out was a fastball middle-in. Ive been looking for that swing for a while and I finally got it. That gave me a lot of confidence right there.” Grand Prairie battled back to score a run off Goldeyes reliever Kyle Bellamy in the top of the ninth, but Winnipeg answered with a two-out RBI single from Haerther in the bottom of the ninth. Winnipeg tallied three consecutive two-out hits in the final inning to pull off the comeback, as Reggie Abercrombie and Mazzola led it off. “Without Abercrombie and Mazzola ahead of me, that would have never happened,” Haerther said. “It all happened with two outs, which was fun. “It was a great team win. We were down 5-0 most of the game.” Haerther had four hits in the game for the Goldeyes, as did Ryan Pineda. Along with Webb, they also had two RBI. Despite the five-run second inning, Salamida went 6 1/3 innings and took a no-decision. Bellamy got the win for Winnipeg. Despite the blown save, he got a double play with the bases loaded to end the top of the ninth. Bennett Whitmore suffered the loss for Grand Prairie. The rematch goes Tuesday night at Shaw Park. WASHINGTON -- An already rough-and-tumble playoff series between the Washington Wizards and Chicago Bulls now has a full-blown fracas, an ejection and a Game 4 suspension for Nene. What everyone will be watching when these clubs meet Sunday, with Washington leading the Eastern Conference series 2-1, is just how physical the play will get -- and whether things will escalate again. "Weve had scuffles all three games, basically. Youve got to make sure we dont lose our composure, where we get thrown out of the game like that. It doesnt matter who it is, we cant afford that," Washington coach Randy Wittman said after the Wizards loss Friday night. "So weve just got to do a better job. Hey, its very emotional. Emotional game, tough game." Nene was tossed with about 8 1/2 minutes left in the fourth quarter after wrapping both hands around the back of Jimmy Butlers head and neck as they stood so close their foreheads touched. Rod Thorn, the NBAs president of basketball operations, announced Saturday that Nene had been suspended one game without pay for head-butting and grabbing Butler "around the neck with both hands and attempting to throw him down." Butler made two key 3-pointers from there, helping the fourth-seeded Bulls win 100-97. "When you play physical ... things get hot," Nene said with a smile and a shrug Friday. During Washingtons victory at Chicago in Game 2, some lesser contretemps led to a total of four players getting called for technical fouls: Washingtons Bradley Beal and Trevor Ariza, and Chicagos Kirk Hinrich and Joakim Noah. So neither club seemed all that surprised at the rising temperature in Game 3. "Hes a guy, just like each one of us, hes a guy with a big ego," Wizards centre Marcin Gortat said about Nene. "Theres nobody in this locker room whos going to be pushed around like that. And thats just how he reacted. Does he deserve two technical fouls? I dont know. But at the end of the day, he got kicked out and we had to play without him." Added Beal: "It gets to the point where you just get pushed to the limit way too much, and I think Nene got pushed to the limit. Do we agree with what he did? Not necessarily, but he did it and we cant take it back." Noah, who has spent plenty of time jostling with Nene in the low block, called the ejection a "turning point" of Fridays game. Indeed, not only did Nene average a team-high 20.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in Washingtons wins in Games 1 and 2, but the teams entire approach changes when the 6-foot-11 Brazilian is on the floor. He provides big-body defence and soft-hands passing. He can score and rebound. Hes so influential that John Wall, Washingtons All-Star point guard, has called him the "X-factor." During the regular season, Washington won two of three games from Chicago, but lost at home 96-78 on April 5 without an injured Nene. The Wizards scored 26 points in the first half. As for what Game 4 would mean without Nene, Noah said Saturday before the official announcement, "Im not sure. I dont think it changes our mindset, though. Its a crucial game for us. All three games really came down to the end. Attention to detail is huge. The game in these situations is so mental. For us, its just about staying focused on the things that we can control." Asked whether he thought Nenes actions warranted a suspension, Noah said, "As a player, those arent things I can control. The only thing I can control right now is eating lunch and ice baths and sleeping and shooting free throws and things like that." All three games so far have been won by the visiting team, a pattern the Bulls would love to see continue Sunday, of course. "I cant tell you why thats happened," Wizards forward Trevor Ariza said. While Washingtons offence is particularly dependent on young guards Wall and Beal, the Bulls found some new sources of much-needed offence in Game 3: Mike Dunleavy scored 35 points, one shy of his NBA high, and Butler finished with 15, including a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 24 seconds to go. Wittman will want to come up with a way to change that Sunday, of course. What is not likely to change is the testy nature of this matchup. "It gets chippy," Bulls forward Taj Gibson said. "But youve got to be smart. Its playoff basketball. You can get ejected; you can get suspended. Youve got to keep your hands to yourself." Authentic Grayson Allen Jersey . HONOLULU -- Kansas City and San Francisco will have plenty of clout in Honolulu if they dont make it to New Jersey for the Super Bowl. The NFL revealed Friday that the Chiefs and 49ers each had eight players voted into the Pro Bowl, including running backs Jamaal Charles of Kansas City and Frank Gore of San Francisco. Denver quarterback Peyton Manning was selected to his 13th Pro Bowl after receiving the most votes among fans, 1.43 million. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees was second among fans with 1.2 million votes. The NFL combines votes from fans, players and coaches to determine 86 of 88 Pro Bowl players; the other two players are long-snappers selected by Pro Bowl coaches. Voting ended Thursday. Under a new format this year, NFL greats Jerry Rice and Deion Sanders will divvy up the players in a two-day draft before the Jan. 26 game. Offensive and defensive players with the most votes who dont make it past the divisional playoff round will serve as active player captains. Charles said Friday night on a reveal show on the NFL Network that he should be picked first. "I think I got the best skillset of anybody on the roster," Charles said. "I think I can play wide receiver and then put the ball in my hand, also. The only thing I cant do is throw the ball." Carolina linebacker Luke Kuechly said hell be fine wherever hes picked. "I dont know, you got to get the guy who scores points," he said. The schoolyard-style selections mean its likely teammates will be forced to play on opposite sides. Players on the winning team will earn $53,000 while the losers will get $26,000 under the collective bargaining agreement. San Francisco linebacker NaVorro Bowman said he thinks it would be weird to have to tackle Gore or Pro Bowl tight end Vernon Davis. "I might not tackle him," Bowman said. "Just let him score and get his yards or whatever. Yeah, thatd be weird because that hasnt happened since training camp." Rice and Sanders playfully bantered about possible selections, with Sanders saying he wanted players on his roster who havent been to many Pro Bowls. "If you have five years or more, dont even worry about it Im not going to pick you," Sanders said. "Go play for Jerry." Rice said later: "Youre trying to bait me -- thats not going to happen." Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman received 552,600 votes by fans, the most for any defensive player. Houston defensive end J.J. Watt had just under 410,000 fan votes. San Francisco is set to send eight players to the game for the second year in a row, though its players missed the game earlier this year because they made the Super Bowl, losing to Baltimore. Kansas Citys eight selections are up from six last year. The Chiefs are 11-4 this year -- up from 2-14 last year -- and the No. 5 seed in the AFC playoffs heading into a largely meaningless game for them against San Diego on Sunday. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Friday he has never been big on Pro Bowl selections. "Im happy for the guys when and if they make it. Im proud of them for it," Reid said. "But we dont get caught up in all of the individual accolades. (Were) just getting ourselves ready to play." Manning was one of five players selected from Denver, which has a shot at putting up the most points of any team in NFL history. All but five teams had at least one player selected. NEW YORK -- Jason Kidd has a winning record for the first time in his coaching career. "Doesnt matter," he said. "It doesnt. Were playing better, thats all that matters." Better than anybody in the Eastern Conference since the new year, in fact. Joe Johnson scored 21 points, Marcus Thornton came off the bench for 20, and the Nets powered their way above .500 for the first time this season by beating the Memphis Grizzlies 103-94 on Wednesday night. Deron Williams added 16 points and Paul Pierce 14 for the Nets (30-29), who have won four in a row overall and six straight at home in turning around a turbulent start. They are still only sixth in the Eastern Conference, but look capable of climbing more after following a rout of Chicago on Monday by clobbering the Grizzlies for most of this one. The matchup between two of the NBAs best teams in 2014 was a mismatch until the fourth quarter, when the Nets had already led by 30. Memphis fell to 21-9 since Jan. 1, while the Nets 20-8 record is tops among East teams. "Its not always how you start, its going to be how you finish. And I think with the way weve been playing as of late, since the All-Star break, since the turn of the new year, this is the Nets team that I envisioned from the beginning of the season," Pierce said. Jon Leuer scored 19 and Marc Gasol 18 for the Grizzlies, who were without Zach Randolph because of the flu and then turned in a sickly performance. Memphis never led and missed a chance to tie Phoenix for the Wests eighth and final playoff spot. "We look at the standings every day. I hear guys talking about who lost, who won. Just to come out with a performance like this is devastating," guard Tony Allen said. "But we cant hold our heads down. Weve got to keep pushing." Leading scorer Mike Conley missed all eight shots and had two points and six turnovers. "It was a tough night," Memphis coach Dave Joerger said. "We had some guys really, really struggle tonight. Give them credit. They came out and played with a much more forceful nature, attacking us, both being physical defensively and just the mentality that, you know Were going to bring it to you." Jason Collins played 17 scoreless minutes on the day he signed his second 10-day contract. The NBAs first openly gay player got a visit in the locker room before the game from Commissioner Adam Silver, but received just polite applause when he checked in during the second quarter after getting a standing ovation Monday during his home debut. Randolph sat in front of his locker before the game with his sweatshirts hood pulled over his head, ultimately deciding he lacked the energy to play. Pierce went right at his replacement, Ed Davis, and already had eight points by the time Davis was yanked with the Grizzlies trailing 13-2. James Johnson replaced him and quickly botched a fast-break layup as Memphis missed 10 of its first 11 shots. Andray Blatches three-point play made it 26-5 with 3:30 left in the first, and Brooklyn led 54-44 at halftime. Brooklyn scored the first nine of the second half to open a 19-point lead and kept pouring it on by making six 3-pointers in the third quarter. The lead hit 87-57 on Johnsons short jumper, but the Nets had to bring starters back when the Grizzlies sliced that in half by midway in the fourth. The Nets were 10-21 after getting blown out at San Antonio on New Years Eve, threatening to become the NBAs biggest flop after building a team that would cost more than $180 million in salary and taxes. But theyve kept rolling after losing leading scorer Brook Lopez for the season, and most recently playing without Kevin Garnett for the past three because of back spasms. They picked up Thornton in a trade with Sacramento just before the trade deadline, a move that was all but ignored after they signed Collins a few days later. But hes scored 20 or more in two of his first five games with the Nets, and had 15 in the second quarter alone Wednesday. Notes: The Nets are 9-3 against West teams since Jan. 1. ... The Grizzlies Nick Calathes was chosen Wednesday as the Western Conference rookie of the month for February, when he averaged 10.7 points and 4.6 assists. ... Memphis had scored 110 in each of two previous games and was averaging 103.4 since the All-Star break. PETERSBURG, Fla.Day 23 in 100 words or less It was a day for central defenders and set-piece goals. Time to go through the motions and squeeze out a victory had passed. It was a day for the serious World Cup contenders to step up and show us what they had. Brazil and Germany, with eight World Cups between them, did just that and now meet each other in Tuesdays semifinal. Germany 1-0 France Twenty years ago next week Germany were almost there.  Just after 1:30pm in the afternoon, inside the blistering heat of Giants Stadium, New Jersey, the Germans led 1-0 in a World Cup quarterfinal against Bulgaria with 15 minutes left in the match. The reigning World Champions were about to become the first ever country to reach four straight World Cup semifinals.  Bulgaria suddenly scored two goals in three minutes and in a New York minute the Germans were going home. The football world was stunned. No one since has made the final four of the World Cup four times in a row. Until today. Fittingly, it was Germany again, playing on another hot afternoon, and up a goal on their opponents. This time, though, there was no meltdown in the heat.  Joachim Lows team havent been near their best in Brazil since a blistering opening 30 minutes against Portugal but this was their best showing since that showing in Salvador 18 days ago.  It was a statement of intent from Lows side. A statement that they can win games in such a manner.  "You are not only the best side in the world, you are the best side I have ever seen." That is what Low said to Xavi after Spain had defeated his German team in the semifinal four years ago. Spain won 1-0 that day, through a headed goal, scored by a centre-back from a set-piece. Low, then, will surely have been thinking about that when his team beat France the same way.  Goalscorer Mats Hummels had a wonderful match. He would have been man of the match even if Germanys goal had been scored by someone else.  Behind him, Manuel Neuer, earning his 50th cap, was also impressive again, making two outstanding saves, with one denying Karim Benzema in the final moments.  Philipp Lahm at right back wasnt anywhere near his best but his positioning made sense for the collective balance of the side. Thats because it allowed Sami Khedira to come into midfield and he made a big difference. The Real Madrid man is clearly still not at his peak after a long layoff through injury but his penetrating runs into space makes Germany more flexible in attack and, subsequently, harder to defend against.  With Thomas Muller still a menace in attack, either on the right or central, all of this means Low is building a side with a strong spine. You do not need to have 11 players all at the top of their game to win a World Cup. This is good news for Mesut Ozil and whoever plays alongside him and Muller.  Ozil is clearly struggling inside this system but with other players excelling it is not as vital. Lows mind will be full of exceptional memories of Ozil performing brilliantly at the last two major tournaments. He remains good at spatial awareness and in possession when given outlets close by. However, he is far from at his best and his reputation as a player who needs a lot of love shows he is incredibly low on confidence.  He is, however, like all of his teammates, just two wins away from being a world champion.  France go home with their heads held high and will be a force on home soil at Euro 2016. The Champions League has been a wonderful stage for many to show they can compete at a high level, while Ligue 1 continues to produce some sensational young players not even seen in Brazil. For those who were in Brazil, this tournament, unlike the past two, will have provided them a lot of good lessons in cohesion both on and off the field. Didier Deschamps deserves a lot of credit for turning Les Bleus into a team their nation loves once again, just nine months after many couldnt stand them anymore.  Brazil 2-1 Colombia Where do we start? Here is what we DO know: Brazil scored two goals via set pieces and now have only scored two goals from open play in four games against Croatia, Mexico, Chile and Colombia at this World Cup. Games against Cameroon should not count when evaluating their attack. The ggame was very physical.dddddddddddd The ref was very average. If you followed the match on Twitter there is a good chance that you think Brazil were very, very fortunate. Colombia, however, did very little in the match until going down 2-0. Brazils intensity early in the match was unlike anything we have seen from the hosts so far and, James Rodriguez aside, Jose Pekermans team look like a side that is only good enough to reach the last eight. Thiago Silva was absolutely magnificent in defence. His suspension for the game against Germany is enormous. James Rodriguez got even better, despite the loss. He was a marked man and on a completely different level than his teammates yet he was still sensational, finding space and creating goal-scoring opportunities. He deserved his sixth goal of the World Cup. We bid farewell to Colombia. They played a wonderful part in making this a special World Cup and gave us the true star of this tournament. However, on this night, the rest of the team was shown to be what they are. Juan Cuadrado is very good and had a great tournament but the rest were just good. Good enough to take Colombia to the last eight for the first time. It appears as this column goes to press that Neymar is out of the World Cup.   Here is what we do NOT know: How good are Brazil? This is the biggest question going forward.  Despite getting by two good sides they look very average relying on Neymars pace and creativity in the final third. Without Neymar, they have no real plan B in attack. Even when they are scoring, he is the one creating them. Neymars speed again made a massive difference. You will remember David Luizs goal against Chile but moments earlier it was Neymar whose run got Brazil into that territory. They will miss many things without Neymar but his pace on counters is one the biggest things. Here is a shot of how Brazil lined up in that game. You will see the ball is on the right as #7 Hulk defends his flank. Already Neymar is anticipating a quick counter, wanting to go to the left…. Once that counter happens he is away to press…. Then he wins the ball and is behind the defender…. Here is the build up to the corner won by Brazil that led to their opening goal. Colombia in possession with Neymar lurking and Cristian Zapata deep to deal with his speed….. Brazil win it back and transition with Neymar immediately heading into that zone once again… Neymar is now in possession and Zapata is losing the race despite the head start… Zapata must force it into a corner – out of nothing and all because of the quick counter made by Neymar… Neymar has carried this team on his back so far and now that back can not carry the nation any more.   Man of the day Nominees David Luiz – a sensational free kick gave Brazil the moment of the World Cup so far. Thiago Silva – opened the scoring with a key early goal and was magnificent in defence throughout. James Rodriguez – His name is James. James Rodriguez. No one should ever mispronounce his name ever again. A global star was born in Brazil. Manuel Neuer – the German goalkeeper was, once again, commanding in goal on the big occasion. Got his 50th cap against France and another 50 will be on their way. Mats Hummels – Germany needed a defensive hero very badly and the Borussia Dortmund man returned from the flu to win the game for Joachim Lows side. The winner… David Luiz – He may not have been the best player on the field but it was very special for a Brazilian to score a 35 yard free kick with the SIDE of his foot in such a monumental match. What comes next? Argentina vs Belgium (12pm/9am) and Netherlands vs Costa Rica (4pm/1pm) Burning question for tomorrow Argentina have gone through this World Cup with one great player and ten average ones. Can one player step up from average to good to help Lionel Messi and dispose of Belgium? The Maple Leafs acquired the 24-year-old from the Los Angeles Kings on Jan. 22, 2014 in exchange for Andrew Crezcenzi. Kozun scored 17 goals and added 29 assists for 46 points over 75 games in the American Hockey League in 2013-2014. Kozun has 86 goals and 110 assists for 196 points in 296 career AHL games. Catch all the action beginning at 3:30pm et/12:30pm pt on TSN1, TSN3, TSN4 and TSN5. Both teams are coming off victories in their most recent outings, Edmonton topping Saskatchewan last week by a score of 24-0 and the Argos crushing British Columbia on Sept. 19 on the road, 40-23. In the case of Toronto, the triumph served to snap a four-game slide and kept the club within striking distance of first place in the East Division where it has eight points and trails both Hamilton and Montreal by only two points. Against the Lions during Week 13 action, Chad Owens returned to action and proceeded to show why he is one of the most exciting players in the league. Owens caught eight passes for 117 yards and a score and added another 30 yards on punt returns. Toronto quarterback Ricky Ray converted 24-of-33 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns, surviving three sacks for the visitors. Running backs Curtis Steele and Steve Slaton both found the end zone on the ground in the second half as well. Defensively, Toronto did surrender 415 yards to BC, but at the same time the Lions shot themselves in the foot by committing 13 penalties for a loss of 131 yards. While Toronto was enjoying last week off, Edmonton was thrashing the Roughriders at home, recording the first shutout of the campaign for the Esks. In picking up the second win in the last three outings, Edmonton forced the visitors to use a pair of quarterbacks, limiting the duo of Seth Doege and Tino Sunseri to a mere 114 yards through the air, while picking off each one time and producing six sacks overall. Mike Reilly headed the Edmonton offensive attack as he connected on 14-of-25 passes for 124 yards and a score, not to mention picking up another 106 yardds on 10 rushing attempts.dddddddddddd But as strong as Reilly was with his legs, he actually finished behind John White who tallied a career-high 192 yards rushing on 17 attempts. Thanks to the efforts of Reilly and White, the latter being named the CFL Offensive Player of the Week, the Eskimos survived 12 penalties that amounted to 105 yards. Despite missing more than a month due to injury, White has come back with a vengeance and is now sixth in the league in rushing with 526 yards on just 68 attempts. Averaging a hefty 7.7 yards per carry, you would think that White would also have more than just a couple of TDs on the ground, but thats not the case. Hopefully the return of White means Reilly will not have to put himself in harms way as often moving forward. Nevertheless, Reilly is still the leading ground gainer among quarterbacks and ranks eighth in the league overall with 488 yards on 59 attempts, an average of more than eight yards per carry. The signal caller is in the middle of the pack when it comes to passing yards at this stage of the season, throwing for 2,309 yards, as he completes 64.1 percent of his opportunities. Over on the other side Ray, who is facing off against his former team yet again, is second in the CFL with 3,206 yards with an amazing 68.2 percent level of accuracy., Just as important is Rays league-best 22 touchdowns, against 11 INTs, which has him showing a very successful 96.3 efficiency rating. Able to spread the wealth quite easily, Ray and the Argonauts dont have a single receiver in the top-five in terms of yardage. Instead, it is Owens who checks in with 548 yards on 43 receptions, his total ranking him eighth in the CFL heading into Week 15. Edmonton leads the all-time, regular-season series by a count of 46-40-1, thanks in part to a 41-27 victory in the most recent meeting in late August at home. DOHA, Qatar - With FIFA taking a 2022 summer World Cup off the table, Qatars tournament head now agrees that a winter tournament would be ideal. And although FIFAs investigators are preparing to release the findings of a World Cup corruption probe, Hassan Al Thawadi dismissed any chance of Qatar losing the showpiece event. Its definitely never been raised (by FIFA), the 2022 World Cup Supreme Committee secretary general said in an interview with The Associated Press. That matter has never even been implied.Any attempt to strip Qatar of hosting rights would be poorly received across the region, Al Thawadi cautioned.I dont think it would go down very well, he said. This is the first Arab World Cup. This is the first World Cup in the Middle East. This is the opportunity for a region that is passionate about the game.Although the Gulf nation still insists it could deliver on the bid pledge to stage the World Cup in its traditional June-July slot — by cooling stadiums against the fierce summer heat— that was not an option at last weeks FIFA meeting to find a solution. The question of actually hosting it in the summer was not on the table, Al Thawadi said. Amongst all those different recommendations that we were provided, I expressed my preference that the winter is the ideal time.Looking out from his Doha office, Al Thawadi noted that Novembers cooler temperatures are fantastic — its a nice period of time. The European Club Association proposed an April 28-May 29 timeframe as less disruptive to the domestic campaigns. But that is just too close to the month of Ramadan fasting, which starts in early April 2022, Al Thawadi said.UEFA President Michel Platini champions a January-February tournament and FIFA President Sepp Blatter now backs playing in November-December tournament, which would avoid a clash with the Winter Olympics. The final choice by FIFAs executive committee is expected in 2015, and Al Thawadi said that whatever happens we will always submit to the football communitys decision. Before then, FIFAs ethics chairman Joachim Eckert is expected within days to release findings into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding contests following an investigation by prosecutor Michael Garcia into widespread allegations of vote buying.Qatar has repeatedly insisted that it broke no bidding rules, and Al Thawadi said: I have never had a meeting where I thought the World Cup was threatened in any way.The bid has been questioned over the role of Mohamed bin Hammam, the Qatari who was Asian Football Confederation president at the time of the 2010 vote. Expelled from world football twice — over financial wrongdoing linked to his FIFA presidential campaign and his AFC leadership — Bin Hammam was accused of buying influence for the Qatar bid. TORONTO -- Emmanuel Arceneaux had just one catch in the second half but made it count. Arceneauxs 53-yard TD grab with just over seven minutes remaining earned the B.C. Lions a 33-17 milestone win over the Toronto Argonauts on Sunday night. Arceneaux broke two tackles en route to the end zone at 8:33 of the fourth quarter to anchor the Lions 500th all-time victory. B.C. (5-3) outscored Toronto (3-5) 20-7 in the final frame for its third straight victory. "Manny was behind the linebackers underneath the free safety and I put it in a spot where only he could get it," said Lions quarterback Kevin Glenn. "(Argos linebacker Shane) Horton kind of stuck his hand out at the last minute and it was just over his hand, which was a perfect pass, I guess, and Manny actually caught it. "Thats the type of stuff we look for in his play. Hes a big receiver, a big target to go across the middle like that, catch balls, bounce off guys and still score. It was a very big play at that time, one of those momentum shifters." Ronnie Yells 31-yard interception return TD with 1:56 remaining cemented B.C.s 17th win in its last 19 meetings with Toronto, to the dismay of an announced season-high Rogers Centre gathering of 18,283. That boosted the Argos average attendance to 17,562 through four home dates. B.C. pulled into a third-place tie with Winnipeg (5-3) and Saskatchewan (5-2) in the West Division standings. Edmonton and Saskatchewan (both 6-1) are tied for first and with both the Eskimos and Riders having won earlier this weekend, the Lions had to beat Toronto to keep pace. "Shoot, weve got to keep winning," Glenn said. "You want to stay in the race, youve got to keep winning. "This is a pretty good race in the West." And its going to get even better Sunday when B.C. hosts Saskatchewan. Toronto played its second game in five nights after a 38-21 home win over Winnipeg on Tuesday night. B.C. did little offensively after going ahead 10-0 in the first and Ricky Rays 18-yard TD strike to Terrell Sinkfield just 16 seconds into the fourth put the Argos ahead 17-13. B.C. countered with Paul McCallums 32-yard field goal at 2:51 before going ahead 19-17 on his 27-yard boot at 5:30, set up by Tim Browns second 70-yard punt return. Arceneaux and Yell then clinched the win with their touchdowns. However, it was solid special-teams play by Brown (10 punt returns, 168 yards) and punter Ricky Schmitt (10 punts, 45.2-yard average) as well as stout defence -- Toronto mustered just 245 net offensive yards -- that gave Glenn and Co. the chance to come up big late in the game. "It was a team victory because those two aspects held us in the game, then we made some plays," said Lions head coach Mike Benevides. A fact not lost upon Toronto head coach Scott Milanovich. "I thought we got beat on special teams and on offence," he said. "We made too many mistakes, a fumble early and then getting stopped three times on short drives, our defence just got worn down." Toronto remains atop the East Division, four points ahead of Ottawa, Hamilton and Montreal (all 1-6 records). "Its certainly better than not being in first place," Milanovich said. "The guys in that lockerroom arent proud of our record. "Were still focussed on getting better with each game and heading into the playoffs." Glenn finished 14-of-25 passing for 208 yards. Stefan Logan, replacing CFL rushing leader Andrew Harris (foot), ran for 145 yards and added five catches for 49 yards. Arceneaux recorded three receptions for a game-high 81 yards. "Its like we have two starting tailbacks on our team," Glenn said. "Its like the same situation with the quarterback position, weve got two starting quarterbacks on our team. "We didnt change our offence or anything for Stefan and he did the same things when Andrew is in there." B.C. quarterback Travis Lulay also saw his first game action, the first of his three series coming with the Lions leading 10-0 in the first quarter. Lulay spent the first six weeks on the injured list following off-season shoulder surgery, then came on the roster last week as Glenn has started every game for the Lions. "It was pretty close to what I wanted," Benevides said. "In the end it was the second phase of the process. "Last week was the sidelines, being a backup and listening to all the adjustments. Then this week was actually getting into the line of fire a little bit. That was important." B.C.s defence sacked Ray twice but applied consistent pressure throughout on the Toronto quarterback, who finished 23-of-39 passing for 181 yards with a TD but also two interceptions. "They were able to get a little bit of pressure but I just didnt play well," Ray said. "I tried to hang in there but I just didnt get the job done." B.C. got a break early in the third when Torontos Dwight Anderson recovered a Shawn Gore fumble following a six-yard catch and returned it to the B.C. 20-yard line. But Gore was ruled down by contact and the visitors maintained possession. McCallum booted three converts and four field goals. Torontos Swayze Waters kicked three field goals, a convert and single. Adeiny Hechavarria immediately followed the ruling with a go-ahead sacrifice fly for the Miami Marlins, who held on to beat the Seattle Mariners 3-2 on Sunday completing a three-game sweep. It was a protest that began with one player sitting for the national anthem. It wasnt until the third game of pre-season that Colin Kaepernick was spotted, and the news story turned into a contentious political chip in the race for presidential election. The 49ers quarterback has been made the week six starter for San Franciscos game against the Buffalo Bills, and is backing himself to impress after restructuring his contract to remove an injury guarantee. But the six-year veteran, who helped the 49ers to the 2012 Super Bowl, has been in the spotlight all season after refusing to stand for the Star Spangled Banner, which plays ahead of every game.Despite being the back up so far this season, Kaepernick jerseys are the highest selling on the NFLs online site, and players - both team-mates and opposition - are growing in their support for his cause, which he announced after the 49ers pre-season game against the Green Bay Packers. I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour, Kaepernick said.To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.  Kaepernick has been kneeling since the pre-season, and will continue to do so as he starts his first game of 2016 Kaepernick, born to a white mother and African-American father, and adopted as a baby by a white family in Wisconsin, has polarised opinion with his decision to kneel during the national anthem. The 49ers organisation, while not supporting their player, have stated that it is Kaepernicks right to protest, and have donated $1m to improve collaboration between law enforcement and the communities of the Bay Area. However, this is a larger issue than one city or state. Residents in North Carolina rioted after Keith Lamont Scott was shot by police on Tuesday, September 20. Speaking in the midst of the trouble, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said he was in a lose-lose situation when talking about social justice as people were too quick to comment.Im in a position now where its like, if I say something, its going to be critiqued, said Newton. And if I dont say something, oh, you fake. Im a firm believer of justice. Im a firm believer of doing the right thing. And I cant repeat it enough; of just holding people accountable.Im an African-American. I am not happy with how justice has kind of been dealt with over the years - the state of oppression in our community.   Kubiak to miss week six Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak to miss game vs Chargers Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman also used his latest press conference to address the social issues surrounding Kaepernicks protest. The reason these guys are kneeling, the reason were locking arms is to bring people together to make people aware that this is not right. Its not right for people to get killed in the street. And so when a guy takes a knee, you can ignore it. You can say hes not being patriotic, hes not honouring the flag. Im doing none of those things. Im saying, straight up, this is wrong and we need to do something.Athletes making a statement is noot something new, or limited to the NFL.dddddddddddd At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists in a black power salute, demonstrating against the treatment of black Americans.  Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists in a civil rights gesture at the 1968 Olympics In recent years, the St Louis Rams and LeBron James have actively protested social justice issues, but Kaepernicks continued stance has led players from all franchises supporting the quarterback.Greg Milam, US Correspondent for Sky News, believes that what started as one man making a stand for a cause has now become a vehicle for certainly raising, if not addressing the social issues in America today. There is no doubt that this is now a national talking point, especially since he took his protest into the first Monday Night Football game, he said. From a lone act in a pre-season game to now, the fact that other players have joined in, along with players in other sports, with audiences in the tens of millions, I think has taken this to another level. All of the increased attention, the debate and anger, also makes people wary - the issues around injustice faced by minority communities are extremely emotive and, as weve seen before, those tensions can boil over. The fact is that this is an uncomfortable issue for so many people, though, that is kind of the point Kaepernick is making. Basketball star LeBron James wore an I cant breathe t-shirt, displaying the last words of Eric Garner in 2014 Milam believes that a sporting protest was too big of a stage for American politics to ignore. With the country due to elect their new president in November, the issue has not escaped the politicians. President Barack Obama was quick to support Kaepernicks right to protest. In some ways, that has more to do with how American politics works today, jumping on a bandwagon, getting some airtime, but this years race has been divisive and there are a lot of angry people out there. An issue with sport, race, injustice and national pride is too big a target, said Milam. It also means that it is sometimes hard for the facts (that the players say they respect the military, for example) to be heard above the noise and outrage. The very fact that that the national anthem is played at regular sporting events in the US is evidence of just how seriously people take pride in America. Rams players Tavon Austin, Jared Cook and Chris Givens were criticised after they made this gesture in 2014 With Kaepernick starting his first game of 2016, the focus will be on the quarterback more than ever. The highly contentious nature of this debate will continue to divide fans, but it promises to keep the subject in the headlines, all the way until the presidential election on November 8. CORTINA DAMPEZZO, Italy - World Cup ski champion Lindsey Vonn is backing boyfriend Tiger Woods account of how he lost a front tooth. One day after winning her record 63rd World Cup race, Vonn posted to her Facebook account Tuesday that she was happy Woods surprised her by coming to the race, and that she felt terrible that his tooth got knocked out. When he was in the finish area a cameraman accidentally knocked into him and took out his front tooth, Vonn wrote. He was still in great spirits though and didnt complain once or ask for any special assistance or security. We were both just happy to share the moment together.Vonn told USA Today in a phone interview: I didnt see it happen, but I guess some photographer hit him in the face with a camera and it totally knocked his tooth out.Woods missing a tooth created a sensation Monday after the race.Mark Steinberg, Woods agent at Excel Sports Management, said in an email that during a crush of photographers at the awards podium, a media member with a shoulder-mounted video camera pushed and surged toward the stage, turned and hit Tiger Woods in the mouth. Woods tooth was knocked out by the incident.Woods first showed up in the athletes area when Vonns father, Alan Kildow, escorted him in shortly after Vonn took the lead. The golfer then surprised Vonn and gave the skier an emotional hug. After about 10 to 15 minutes of standing near Vonn with her family, Woods was escorted into a white tent usually reserved for measuring skis. He stayed there for nearly an hour, while the last lower-ranked skiers came down and during the podium celebration. After the podium celebration, Woods was escorted by police to a waiting snowmobile and taken away.Race organizers told The Associated Press they were not aware of the incident and that Woods requested extra security and a snowmobile to exit the finish area.I was among those who escorted him from the tent to the snowmobile and there was no such incident, Nicola Colli, the secretary general of the race organizing committee, told The Associated Press. When he arrived he asked for more security and we rounded up police to look after both him and Lindsey.Woods had been wearing a scarf with a skeleton pattern over the lower part of his face, sunglasses and a stocking cap.The photo was taken when the scarf was lowered.Steinberg, through a spokesman, said there would be nothing to add Tuesday.Woods makes his 2015 debut next week in Phoenix. Then Ramos got battered for three innings by Seattles bats and got no help from a shaky defensive night by the Rays. Ramos was knocked around early by the Mariners in their 12-5 win over the Rays that included video reviews on consecutive batters in the first inning and Seattle ace Felix Hernandez getting ejected in the seventh inning. "We got ambushed. We just sashayed into the canyon and they were firing from both sides," Maddon said. Ramos had allowed only nine total runs and 18 hits all season. By the end of the third inning, hed given up 11 hits and nine runs — although only five of those were earned because of four errors in the first two innings by Tampa Bays defence. The Rays committed three errors in the second inning, tying a franchise record. It was a difficult opening to a West Coast road trip for Maddons crew. "They came out aggressive and I took too long to adjust," Ramos said. "I started pitching backward later and started having more success." Even though Ramos got battered, he settled down and helped save Tampa Bays bullpen by getting through 6 2-3 innings. He didnt allow a hit after the third, retiring the final 12 batters he faced. He set career bests for innings pitched and pitches (114) although few will look beyond the rough beginning. "I appreciate him even more for what he did after the bad start," Maddon said. "A lot of guys would not do what he did, the way he saved the rest of the staff. A lot of guys would have caved right there and he did not cave." Hernandez (4-1) won for the first time in more than a month. He took a shutout bid into the sevennth inning, then gave up a three-run double to Ryan Hanigan with two outs and was pulled.dddddddddddd At that point, Hernandez was fuming about the strike zone of plate umpire Mark Ripperger. On his way off the mound, Hernandez had a few words for Ripperger. Hernandez said he couldnt repeat anything he uttered. "Im sure he got his moneys worth. I didnt understand everything he said," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said. "I kind of knew it was going to happen because he was not happy." Hernandez rebounded from a rough last four starts. It was his first start for the Rays since Aug. 15, 2012, when he tossed a perfect game at Safeco Field. Asked his thoughts on giving Hernandez a big early lead, Maddon said, "Thats called being sub-optimal." James Jones doubled, singled and scored in each of the first three innings as the Mariners took a 9-0 lead. Robinson Cano drove in Jones twice. They werent alone at providing production at the top of Seattles order. Stefan Romero homered, doubled and singled and Corey Hart had two hits and two RBIs. Justin Smoak hit a two-run homer and Mike Zunino added a solo shot for Seattle. The rare back-to-back replays came in the first inning as Cano and then Hart both barely missed home runs on fly balls that hit the yellow line atop the fence and bounced back. Umpires ruled both balls in play, and their calls were confirmed. Cano wound up with a double on his drive to left field, Hart was thrown out trying for a double on his shot to right. "That was pretty weird. You had nothing to lose by asking them to review them," McClendon said. NOTES: Rays LHP David Price will make his first career start at Safeco Field on Tuesday. Its just his second start against Seattle in his career. ... Chapel Hill, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouses collide Monday as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish travel to face the North Carolina Tar Heels at the Dean E. Smith Center. Notre Dame officially extended its win streak to double digits with an 83-76 double-overtime thriller against Georgia Tech on Saturday. The Irish have won 10 in a row, and look to improve on a 14-1 record to start the campaign. This will be the first true road game of the season for Notre Dame. North Carolina is looking to build on a five-game win streak after the Tar Heels demolished Clemson on Saturday, 74-50, in an ACC battle. UNC is 5-1 at home this season, and will play three of its next four games at the Smith Center. North Carolina leads the all-time series with Notre Dame, 18-4, and owns a 3-0 mark in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels have won five straight meetings, including two last season. Georgia Tech blew a four-point halftime lead over Notre Dame on Saturday, and allowed the Irish to knot the game at 59-59 when regulations final buzzer sounded. Notre Dame connected on 53.3 percent of its field goal attempts in the contest, including 57.1 percent shooting in the overtime periods to claim the two-OT thriller. Jerian Grant netted a team-high 24 points with six assists (and threw down one of the best dunks of the season), while Steve Vasturia contributed 17 points. Zach Auguste (13 points), Demetrius Jackson (11 points) and Pat Connaughton (10 points, eight rebounds) all had a hand in the win for the Irish. Notre Dames offense is still maintaining its high level of play, and enters the game against North Carolina netting 85.9 ppg on an impressive 55.3 percent shooting touch from the floor. Grant leads the team with a 17.9 ppg mark entering the clash, and is followed up by Auguste (14.7 ppg) and Jackson (14.2 ppg). Connaughton rounds out the teams double-digit scorers this season with 13.2 ppg, adding in a team-best 8.2 rpg mark for the Irish. But it hasnt just been a strong offensive effort that has helped UND to a 14-1 record. The team is holding opponents to a mere 61.9 ppg on 39.5 percent shooting. Clemson was simply overmatched in the clash on Saturday with North Carolina. The Tar Heels held the home Tigers to just 17 first-half points on 17.9 percent shooting from the floor. The Tar Heels were able to coast through the second half on 40 percent shooting to maintain a healthy lead for the win. Justin Jackson led the way for North Carolina with 13 points in the ACC win, but Kennedy Meeks tallied a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds to really help the Heels. Marcus Paige chipped in with 11 points, and Brice Johnson notched 10 points with eight boards. The matchup between Notre Dame and North Carolina will feature two of the best offenses in the ACC, as the Tar Heels come into this clash netting 80.8 ppg on 45.9 percent shooting from the floor. Paige leads a trio of double-digit scorers for the Tar Heels with 13.4 ppg this season, also adding in 52 assists (second to J.P. Tokotos 59) and 16 steals (behind Tokotos 18). Meeks (12.9 ppg) and Johnson (11.5 ppg) round out the group of scorers for UNC, though Jackson checks in at 9.9 ppg, right on the verge of breaking double figures. Meekss 9.1 rpg average is the best on North Carolina through 14 games played. Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd criticized the officiating of the Eastern Conference first round series during a conference call Thursday, saying its "kind of mind-boggling" that Joe Johnson got so few foul calls in Wednesdays Game 5 loss to the Toronto Raptors. "If flopping is the way to go, then we have to maybe play that game," Kidd said. "But Joe is a strong individual and unfortunately, he doesnt flop. He plays and he doesnt complain. But thats why we have officials, for them to make calls." Johnsons only free-throw attempt came on a three-point play late in the fourth quarter that was part of an 8-0 run. Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan got to the free throw line a combined 23 times on Wednesday night. Kidd even called out official Tom Washingtons non-call in the final seconds of Wednesdays loss, when Shaun Livingston and DeRozan collided going for a rebound. No foul was called on the play. "I thought Shaun made a heck of a play to come up with the rebound and get fouled right in front of (referee) Tom Washington, but no call was made," Kidd said. "And Dray (Andray Blatche) came up with the ball and his intention was to get the ball to Deron (Williams), who was wide open, and it just didnt work out." Asked what the Nets could do better defensively against the hot hand of Lowry as they head home for Game 6, Kidd said they needed to slow him down. "Hes knocking down shots, hes getting into the paint, hes finding open guys and hes playing at a very high level,” said Kidd. “We have to make it a little bit tougher on him." Lowry poured in 36 points in Wednesdays victory that gave the Raptors a 3-2 lead in their best-of-seven playoff series. Game 6 goes Friday night in Brooklyn. A lucky champion? An undeserved champion? Or a worthy champion? As Nico Rosberg prepares for match point in Brazil, where he can wrap up the 2016 drivers title with victory, is it time to reconsider the Germans candidature for Formula 1 immortality?Theres no denying Rosbergs CV has imperfections. Conspicuous by its absence is an overtaking move on his Mercedes team-mate - and solitary title rival - Lewis Hamilton. Hes beaten Hamilton off the line on a few occasions this year but those spurts to the first corner owe more to computer software than driver skill. And hes had a lot of luck - or, to be more accurate, Hamilton has had a lot of bad luck. But the fortunes of fate play a part in every sport. If an asterisk was put alongside every champion who enjoyed good luck the rollcall would look like an item of morse code.Nobody, not even Nico or his most committed supporters, is saying he is a faster driver than Hamilton or the best in F1. But is it fair to argue that if Nico does win the title, either in Brazil or Abu Dhabi, it would be fair reward, fair enough, and good fare for Formula 1?Here are seven reasons why Rosberg would be a worthy winner of this years title - if he wins it... It would be a triumph from adversityBarely a year ago, Rosberg looked a broken man - and a broken driver. Whats remarkable about his 2016 title push is that it began less than a week after his lowest moment: Cap spat at the US GP when his mistake allowed Hamilton through to wrap up the title. The following Sunday, displaying admirable fortitude and resilience, Rosberg bounced back with victory in Mexico - the first of seven successive victories for the German. Since the pain in defeat in Austin weve all seen a changed Nico, says an admiring Damon Hill.Whatever your opinion of Rosberg the driver, its impossible not to be impressed by his tenacity. Hes been more consistent than Hamilton Rosberg doesnt have Hamiltons pace. He doesnt have Hamiltons skill at overtaking. And he doesnt have his team-mates capacity to ignite a weekend from the mundane to Box Office entertainment. But neither has Rosberg self-destructed in the manner of Hamilton in Baku, when Lewis crashed into a wall during qualifying, or in Suzuka where Lewis distractions were well snapped and well documented. Rosberg has instead been a model of consistency. His one poor performance occurred on race day in Monaco and his only race-day mistakes, when tangling with Hamilton twice in Spain and Austria and with Max Verstappen in Germany, are open to alternative description. In qualifying, he has scarcely put a wheel off line all year - as testified by the fact he has qualified on the front-row for every single race. As Wolff remarked after the Japanese GP: If you want to be a world champion, you have to minimise mistakes, and thats what Nico is doing. Hell have won it his wayRosberg surprised reporters at the start of 2016 by scoffing at suggestions he needed to get his elbows out and play dirty to prevail over Hamilton. Apparently unconvinced that Mr Nasty would work, Rosberg instead opted to be Mr Nice for 2016. As early as April, his disarming description of Hamilton as the benchmark had become a familiar refrain.Nicos self-discipline has been taken to new levels this year, said Wolff last month. He wouldnt even read a news article that is bad for him because it would annoy him. He just hides everything away that might distract. In the testosterone-driven world of the F1 grid, where the DNA of every driver is built on an unyielding conviction they are uniquely special, Rosbergs self-denial and modesty makes for an unusual approach. But by enabling him to simply focus entirely on his own performances without fretting about any of his team-mates superiorities, its one which has worked for him.To repeat what we wrote in September: Nico doesnt have Hamiltons pace but he has resolve, defiance and a capacity for clear thinking which is standing him in good stead against the occasional torpedo from his team-mate. Hangingg in there isnt a motif legends are written around but its an approach which is working for Nico, a driver whose greatest strength is his acceptance of his weaknesses.dddddddddddd Hes done the hard yardsBeen there, worked it, deserved to win it?As Martin Brundle recently noted: Nico joined Mercedes when they werent successful; he has worked hard and been integral to their development. In other words, hes done the hard yards at Mercedes, shown loyalty and commitment, and seen the good times and bad at Brackley. Does it therefore follow he deserves to reap the rewards? F1 needs a new championBetween them, Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel have won the last six drivers world championships and all-but one of the last eight.Regardles of whether Nico is worthy or not, F1 could do with a new champ as a buffer against accusations of predictability.  At times this season Rosberg has been exceptionalWhile hes perhaps never hit the heights Hamilton has been capable of scaling throughout his career, a cluster of Rosbergs performances this year have been truly outstanding. Some of his drives have been impeccable, says Hill. Former Mercedes boss Ross Brawn thinks Nico Rosbergs preparation off the track has given him the edge on Lewis Hamilton this year. In China, Nico won by almost forty seconds and had the edge over his team-mate long before Hamilton was scuppered by an engine failure at the start of Q3. In Singapore, his qualifying lap was the best of his career as he out-paced Hamilton by over half a second - the largest such defeat Rosberg has inflicted on Hamilton during their four years together. This is his yearRosberg has never been better and in all probability, given that he is already 31, has been at the absolute peak of his powers in 2016. After Singapore, Wolff said that is the best Nico Rosberg I have ever seen and only Hamilton seems unconvinced Rosberg has raised his game. If he does win the championship this season, it would be fitting he does so in a season when hes actually driven like a champion. And thens the importance of the final act to consider. If Rosberg does win the championship in Brazil then, barring an aberration or a car failure for his team-mate, hell win it in the most worthy way possible: with a race victory. In that scenario, a champion drive for a championship, would anyone really argue he doesnt deserve it?Can Nico Rosberg clinch the title at Interlagos? GIBRALTAR, Gibraltar - The captain of Gibraltars national soccer team laughs as he contemplates the task facing his team of amateurs against Germany. To put things in perspective, we have gone from Sunday league football to playing the world champions in 18 months, Roy Chipolina said, shaking his head in bewilderment. Sometimes I have to pinch myself.Win, lose or draw — and some locals here will be happy if Germany is kept to single figures in Fridays European Championship qualifier in Nuremberg — its a victory for Gibraltar just to be sharing a field with a team that beat Brazil 7-1 en route to winning the World Cup four months ago. After a 16-year fight, the tiny British colony — a rocky outcropping on the southern tip of Spain inhabited by about 30,000 people — became a fully recognized international team when it was accepted as the 54th and smallest member of UEFA in 2013. The move had previously been resisted by the Spanish, who dispute the sovereignty of the territory. The acceptance sparked wild celebrations in the narrow streets of Gibraltar, some of the biggest parties since one native won Miss World in 2009.A completely amateur set-up, from the players to the countrys football association, suddenly had to become a whole lot more professional. Within months, they had been drawn in a European qualifying group containing Germany, Poland, Ireland and Scotland. We have gone from 10 people watching us play to 35,000 people watching us play, Chipolina said in an interview just off the bustling main street that runs through Gibraltar, which has an area of just 7 square kilometres. The past 12 months has been a year of firsts for the Gibraltarians: A first official game — a creditable, unexpected 0-0 against Slovakia in November; a first (and so far only) win — 1-0 over Malta in June; a first Euro qualifier — a 7-0 loss to Poland in September. In their two other Group D qualifiers, theyve lost 7-0 to Ireland and 3-0 to Georgia. No points, no goals. Its been a culture shock for the players. Only three Gibraltar internationals play professionally — two of those in the English lower leagues — with the rest having to balance playing the game they love with holding down a full-time job.Take the teams main striker, Kyle Casciaro. He is an operations manager for a shipping firm in Gibraltar and works 9-6 Monday to Friday, as well as being on call every other weekend. In his spare time, he plays for Lincoln Red Imps — one of eight teams in the amateur Gibraltar Premier Division. They train three, sometimes four, nights a week before a weekend match. Then there is fitness work at the gym.Yesterday, I finished work, went home quickly, changed into my kit, had a banana, then went to get the coach to training in Spain, Casciaro said in an interview during a break from work.Going on international duty with Gibraltar involves taking a week off work for the likes of Casciaro and Lincoln teammate Chipolina, who is a customs officer. Representing Gibraltar in 10 European qualifiers per year requires 50 days off work and they have only 25 days of annual leave. So, they rely on the goodwill of their employers to accept a request from the Gibraltar FA to take special leave for international matches. Its hard enough balancing football, work and family, with your wife nagging at you when you go training every night, Chipolina said with a smile. Then youve got to use your annual leave for football, so you have to tell your wife we arent going on holiday this year.Firemen, a policeman, a store manager, a student, a teacher, a researcher — they come from all walks of life to play for Gibraltar.Admittance to UEFA means Gibraltars players are, however, getting a glimpse of what life would be like as a professional footballer. When they go away for international duty, players now wear suits instead of tracksuits, stay in five-star hotels and VIP areas, and are even starting to be asked for autographs. They follow a strict itinerary, when two years ago they would book their own hotels and everything would be fairly ad hoc.But back at their clubs, life can still be amateurish. Gibraltar midfielder Jeremy Lopez plays in the domestic league for Manchester 62 FC, which holds one of its three training sessions each week on a concrete parking lot behind a hotel. Can you imagine Bastian Schweinsteiger doing that? Lopez said, referring to the Germany midfielder he is about to confront. There are severe challenges and hardships facing Gibraltars footballers. There is only one full-sized field on the territory, at Victoria Stadium near the border with Spain. The arena has to be shared by teams from all leagues and age groups — juniors to seniors, men and women — so time is at a premium.Because Victoria Stadium only has a capacity of about 2,000 and doesnt meet UEFA requirements, Gibraltar has to play its home matches in Faro in Portugal — a five-hour drive for the team and their fans, who usually number around 500. The GFA is looking into building an 8,000-seat stadium at the other end of the territory but that is years away from being a reality. And Gibraltar coach Allen Bula said he realistically has a pool of only about 60 players to choose from when he selects his national squad.Still, Gibraltar isnt complaining, not after what it has been through to get recognition from the global football community. Long-awaited UEFA membership is offering the team and the country new opportunities. Its giving us international exposure, free publicity, PR that money cant buy, said GFA chief executive Dennis Beiso, whose target is for Gibraltar to become the best of the minnows within Europe on and off the field.A daunting trip to Germany awaits but its not the first huge obstacle to have faced Gibraltars footballers. It wont be the last. Its going to be a different level, a different planet, Casciaro said. I think, to be quite honest, they are going to score as many goals as they want. Dennis Smith Jr. Jersey . Brandon Morrow allowed five runs on six hits over three innings.
